Everest Region with Children and Teens
Start with the altitude
Taking children to the Everest region means taking them to a place where the lowest village on the main trail, Lukla, is already about 2,840 m. Altitude illness can affect children and adults unpredictably, and a small child may not be able to describe a headache or nausea. Ask a doctor about your own family before you book, and plan the trip around short stays at modest height. This page sorts the region into places that suit families, places that need serious thought, and places to leave out.
Reasonable for families
- The trail from Lukla to Namche Bazaar (about 3,440 m), with a rest day in Namche.
- Khumjung and Khunde, villages of stone-walled lanes a walk away from Namche, with a monastery at Khumjung.
- The terrace at Hotel Everest View (Syangboche, about 3,880 m), best for older children. Check it is open for visitors first.
- Namche Bazaar on Saturday morning, when the weekly market is on.
Children under 10 enter the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu municipality free, according to a 2024 report in Himal Press. For adults the fee is about NPR 3,000, and park entry is roughly NPR 3,000 to 3,400. Confirm what applies on arrival. The Himal Press report on the municipal fee has the details.
Think twice
Anything above Namche demands that each child can say clearly how they feel and that the adults will turn back at the first sign of trouble. Tengboche (about 3,867 m) is a stage for teenagers who are used to long days on foot, and a guide should set the pace. The trek to Everest Base Camp takes 12 to 14 days and is not planned around children.
Leave out
- Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar for young children.
- The high passes of the Three Passes trek.
- The Khumbu Icefall, which is for permitted climbing expeditions only.
- Any rafting or kayaking. There is none in the region, and the upper Dudh Koshi is a steep glacial torrent.
- Anything on the Gokyo Lakes. They are a sacred and protected wetland, and the water is close to freezing.
Warning signs in children
Look for unusual sleepiness, refusing food, vomiting, wobbly walking or a child who cries without being able to explain. These are reasons to descend immediately. Do not ask a child to rest and see. Keep the rise in sleeping height above 3,000 m to about 300 to 500 m a day and hire a licensed guide.
Flights and cover
Kathmandu to Lukla takes about 30 to 40 minutes by small plane. In spring and autumn many flights depart from Manthali instead, after a road transfer of about 4 to 5 hours, often before dawn. Weather delays are common, so allow 2 or 3 spare days. Choose insurance that includes trekking at height and helicopter rescue.
