Family Trips in the Philippines by Age Group
Family trips in the Philippines, sorted by age
Children’s needs change fast, and so does the best Philippine island for them. Match the activity to the age and keep the transfers short, since every island hop eats a day.
Toddlers and preschoolers
Choose calm sand and short days. Boracay’s White Beach slopes gently into the sea and is a good fit from roughly November to April, in Amihan. In Habagat, June to November, surf is rougher, so look at the flag each morning and stay at the calm end if the sea is up. Visitors pay a ₱300 environmental fee once per stay and ₱150 at the Caticlan jetty each way. Pre-school children also enjoy Manila Ocean Park, open daily from about 10:00 to 18:00, with a curved underwater tunnel and sea lion shows; adult tickets were reported around ₱680 to ₱750. Ages 6 to 12
This is the sweet spot for animals and science. The Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary in Corella, Bohol, lets children watch tarsiers sleeping on branches while guides whisper facts. Entry is a small cash fee, hours are about 09:00 to 16:00, and there is no flash and no touching. Children in this group also pay the reduced ₱75 at the Chocolate Hills deck in Carmen, against ₱150 for non-resident adults, and can manage the 214 steps. In Manila, the National Museum complex is free daily from 09:00 to 18:00, and the Natural History building has a giant crocodile skeleton. The Mind Museum in Taguig has over 250 hands-on exhibits and a dinosaur skeleton, but is closed on Mondays; see themindmuseum.org .
Cebu to Bohol is a ferry of about 2 hours; timetables are on oceanjet.net .
Teens
Older children can take on more. Kawasan Falls canyoneering near Badian in Cebu involves walking, swimming and cliff jumps of 3 to 10 m, with a licensed guide, helmet and life vest required. Siargao suits teens learning to surf, with lessons of about ₱500 to ₱600 an hour and board rental of ₱300 to ₱500 a day. In the Palawan town of Sabang, the 45-minute Underground River boat ride is a good group outing with a permit capped at 900 visitors a day. Check teen-friendly tours where operators allow minimum ages.
Family safety rules
- Life jackets are mandatory on motorised bangka boats; refuse boats without them.
- Boats can be suspended by the Coast Guard at short notice in typhoon season, so build in a spare day or two before flights home.
- Pack reef shoes for sea urchins and vinegar for jellyfish stings, never fresh water.
- Carry cash for island fees, tricycles and meals.
Before you fly
Most nationalities may stay 30 days visa-free. Register on the free site etravel.gov.ph in the 72 hours before arrival.
Verdict: for a first trip with children, pair Cebu and Bohol, then add Boracay in the dry months. For longer circuits, read the multi-day trips page .
