Ghana Attraction Tours by Hub: Accra to Kumasi
Attraction tours in Ghana
Most Ghanaian attractions sit around three bases, and the sensible way to plan is to pick a base, then add stops within a morning’s reach. Figures are in cedis (GH₵); the rate was about 11.7 per US$ on 1 October 2026 and shifts, so treat dollar equivalents as approximate.
Base one: Accra
Teshie fantasy coffins. Along the coast road at Teshie and Nungua, Ga carpenters shape coffins as fish, pods, planes and bottles to mark a person’s trade or ambitions. The Kane Kwei and Paa Joe workshops welcome visitors, and a studio tour is commonly priced at GH₵50 to GH₵100.
National Museum of Ghana. Found on Barnes Road in Adabraka, it covers archaeology, gold weights, royal textiles and modern art, and it shuts on Mondays. Admission for foreign adults differs by source, so check the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board at gmmb.gov.gh .
Getting around: app-based taxis such as Bolt and Yango run about GH₵40 to GH₵80 for central rides and the airport transfer.
Base two: the Eastern Region
Odumase Krobo, about 1.5 hours north of Accra, is the centre of Krobo glass beadwork. At the Cedi Bead Factory, visitors crush bottle glass, fill clay moulds and fire beads in a wood kiln, and classes of one to two hours are reported at GH₵80 to GH₵150. Combine it with the drive to the Volta side, and ask the workshop to confirm hours.
Base three: Kumasi
Reach Kumasi by Intercity STC coach (4.5 to 6.5 hours, about GH₵120 to GH₵160; stc.gov.gh ) or by a 40-minute flight. From there, a half-day taxi or guide charter to the villages typically costs GH₵300 to GH₵500. Bonwire weavers produce Kente cloth on pit looms; Ntonso printers boil bark dye and stamp Adinkra proverbs with calabash blocks, and you can print your own scarf. The Manhyia Palace Museum adds the royal context. See Kumasi craft tours on Viator .
Manners and money
Ask before taking photographs of artisans, and buy straight from the maker where possible. Cedis in cash cover most gates and street food, mobile money is common, and cards work at larger Accra hotels and restaurants. Get malaria advice from a doctor or travel clinic before departure; the risk covers the whole country, including the coast and Accra.
Paperwork
Paperwork comes first: UK and US passport holders must hold a visa, requested through the government’s e-visa site, evisa.immigration.gov.gh , which shows the current fee. Carry your yellow fever certificate, because it is required and otherwise you may be turned back or vaccinated at the airport.
Verdict: Bonwire and Ntonso make the strongest half day, with Teshie as the quirkiest. See the walking tours page for city streets to pair with them.
