Antwerp itself is flat city walking, but the wider Flanders countryside within train reach has proper walking country: open heathland, North Sea dunes, and Belgium’s one national park. None of it needs a car if you plan around the rail and coast-tram network. Here are the best walking areas to reach from the city, with an honest note on how far each really is.
Kalmthoutse Heide
The closest true walking landscape to Antwerp. A short train ride north brings you to the Kalmthoutse Heide, a broad cross-border heath-and-dune reserve of heather, drifting sand, and pine woods, laced with waymarked trails for anything from an hour to a full day. It is free to walk, and the late-summer heather bloom is the season to aim for. This is the easy half-day escape when the city walking runs out.
The coast and dunes
Take the train to the coast at Ostend (1h34-1h45, €18-27 one way) and you reach a long, flat dune-and-beach walking line. The Kusttram runs the full length of the shoreline, so you can walk a stretch of dunes, hop the tram, and walk another, covering far more coast than on foot alone. It is exposed walking, best in the roughly May-to-September window; skip it in a winter gale.
Hoge Kempen National Park
For the most serious walking, Hoge Kempen is Belgium’s national park, a large expanse of pine forest, heath, and former quarry lakes over in the Limburg province. It is the furthest of the three from Antwerp, reached by train toward Genk and a local connection, so treat it as a full-day commitment rather than a quick add-on (verify current connections before you go). The reward is the biggest, quietest walking country in this part of Belgium.

Wear proper footwear for sand and heath tracks, carry water and a rain layer since the weather turns fast, and check return train times before you set out, as rural services thin out in the evening.
