Kaikoura Romance: Tree Houses and Dark Skies
Kaikōura for two
A couple’s visit to Kaikōura can be built around three things: a good room, a night sky and a meal of local crayfish. The town sits between mountains and sea, and the pace is slow once the boat trips are done. Costs below are in NZD and rates vary by date, so check before booking.
The rooms
Hapuku Lodge + Tree Houses sits in a native kānuka grove on Station Road at Hapuku, north of town on SH1. It has five tree houses, four lodge suites and an olive-grove cottage. A one-night stay for two in March 2026 began at about $1,155, which makes it a luxury choice. See the Hapuku Lodge website .
Sudima Kaikōura is on the shoreline at 114 Esplanade, on the corner of Yarmouth Street. Its 120 rooms are rated 4.5 stars by the hotel, and it has the Hiku restaurant and a heated outdoor infinity pool.
The White Morph at 92 Esplanade is part of the Heritage Collection and has suites and premium rooms with spa baths. Expect to pay between about $169 and $590 a night.

Under the stars
In September 2024 Kaikōura was named a Dark Sky Sanctuary. The sanctuary spans about 2,039 km², which is roughly 98% of the district, but excludes the township. Moana Skies is a local stargazing operator, based on Inland Kaikōura Road, and it runs all year. Its “Explore the Cosmos” tour lasts about 90 minutes and starts at about $109. A Seal Kayak and Stargazing combination starts at about $240. Weather cancellations are refunded in full. Confirm prices with the operator and check NZTA Journeys for the state of Route 70.
On the water
For a quiet outing, ask Kaikōura Kayaks about its Sunset Evening Classic or a private tour. For whales, Whale Watch Kaikōura charges about $185 per adult, refunds 80% if no whale is found, and offers a VIP Captain’s Cabin at about $265. See the Whale Watch FAQ .
Crayfish for dinner
Nin’s Bin has sold crayfish beside SH1 at Half Moon Bay since 1977, about 15 to 20 minutes north of town. In town, Kaikōura Seafood BBQ on Fyffe Quay sells crayfish, mussels, chowder and whitebait fritters. Half a crayfish there starts at about $45. Opening hours at both change, so call first.
A walk together
Start on the Peninsula Walkway at the town centre and walk 4.4 km to the Point Kean car park, then 200 m to the viewpoint. High tide can cover the shoreline and the cliff edges are unfenced. Stay at least 20 m from seals.
Tips
- Boat trips cancel in rough seas, so schedule them early in your stay.
- Seasickness is common on boats, so keep breakfast light.
- Wrap up warmly for stargazing.
