Ljubljana Sightseeing: Old Town to Castle Hill
Ljubljana Sightseeing, Square to Summit
Ljubljana’s main sights fall into a line, running from the river to the hilltop, so a single day can follow it without backtracking. Start low in the morning and finish with the view.
Prešeren Square
The meeting point of the city is a wide square with a monument to the poet France Prešeren and the pink Franciscan Church of the Annunciation, built in 1660. The square is free to visit, and the Triple Bridge begins at its edge.
Triple Bridge
The Triple Bridge links the square to the medieval bank. Jože Plečnik widened an 1842 stone bridge between 1929 and 1932 by adding two pedestrian bridges, and the work forms part of the UNESCO listing of 2021. Pause at the balustrades, then continue towards the old town.
Town Hall and Robba Fountain
On Mestni trg, the Robba Fountain dates from 1751, with obelisks that stand for the rivers Sava, Krka and Ljubljanica. The original sculptures are kept in the National Gallery, which charges €10 for adults and €5 for students.
Dragon Bridge
Four dragons of sheet copper guard this Art Nouveau crossing, which dates from 1901. The dragon is the city’s emblem, tied to the legend of Jason and the Argonauts slaying a dragon in the marshes. Butcher’s Bridge, nearby, carries love padlocks and Prometheus sculptures.
Up to the castle
You can walk the forest path in 10 to 15 minutes or take the funicular, which is €6 return or €3.30 one way. Castle entry is €15 at the ticket points and €13.50 online without the funicular, or €19 and €17.10 with it. Climb the 19th-century spiral staircase of the Outlook Tower for the best panorama over the roofs, the marshes and the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. The last ticket is sold one hour before closing. Check current hours on the castle website , and consider the Ljubljana Card at €41 for 24 hours if you also want the river cruise and gallery.
River finish
Back at the water, a short cruise gives a different angle on the bridges you walked. Wooden electric boats cost about €16 for adults, and you can compare Ljubljana cruises on GetYourGuide .
Practical tips
- The centre is closed to private cars, so wear comfortable shoes.
- Pickpockets work crowded spots, so keep valuables close.
- LPP buses cost €1.50 a ride, and there are no trams or metro.
Tip
Reach the castle before 10:00 for the quietest tower and a clear view. Plečnik fans can continue to the walking tours page for a longer route.
