Luxembourg Family Days Out With Children
Planning a trip to Luxembourg with children is straightforward because every second-class train, tram and bus in the country is free. That leaves entry fees as the main cost. This page groups the options by what children tend to want from a day, with euro prices and the months each place is open.
For animal lovers
Parc Merveilleux in Bettembourg is the country’s only wildlife park by its own description. It holds nearly 200 species from five continents, plus a mini-zoo with dwarf goats, playgrounds and mini-golf. It is shut for the winter and reopens on 20 March 2027. Tickets bought online for a set date cost EUR 15 for adults, EUR 11 for ages 3 to 14 and EUR 13 for students and seniors from 60. Buying at the gate adds EUR 2. Children under 3 enter free, a ride token costs EUR 1.50 and the LuxembourgPass gives free entry. From Bettembourg station, bus 550 runs every 30 minutes Monday to Saturday, and a free shuttle covers weekends. The park’s ticket page lists the current prices.
The Butterfly Garden in Grevenmacher sells one-hour slots from EUR 10 on weekdays and EUR 11 at weekends. Booking is advised. Its last confirmed season ran from April to October, so look up this year’s dates first at papillons.lu .
For curious minds
- Luxembourg Science Center, Differdange: adults EUR 17, ages 6 to 17 and students EUR 10, under 6 free. Shows of 45 to 60 minutes for ages 6 and up come with the ticket, and the exploration room needs about 3 hours. Opening is 09:00 to 17:00 from Monday to Friday and 10:00 to 18:00 at weekends. Children aged 8 and over can add the Kitchen Lab for EUR 6.50.
- Natur musee, Grund: EUR 7 for adults, EUR 5 reduced and no charge under 21. Tuesday evenings after 17:30 are free, and the museum is closed on Mondays.
- Schengen Museum: EUR 5 for adults and EUR 3 for ages 7 to 17, with a children’s booklet to follow the exhibits. It is open every day from 10:00 to 18:00.
For energetic children
Echternach has a lake with a marked swimming zone, available in the official bathing season of May to September. At the youth hostel next to it you will find the Adventure Island high ropes and a 14 m indoor climbing wall with bouldering. Canoes, kayaks and paddleboards are for hire at the Lultzhausen youth hostel in summer, but only children from 5 to 17 with an adult may use them. Chairlift rides in Vianden run in the warm months, at EUR 5 return for under 14s.
For lift and tram fans
The Pfaffenthal panoramic lift and the funicular to Kirchberg cost nothing. The funicular rises 40 metres in 63 seconds. The Luxtram T1 line has 24 stops between Findel Airport and Stadion/Cloche d’Or, again free.
Planning with children
Pair an indoor stop with an outdoor one so rain does not wreck the day, for example the Natur musee with a walk along the Grund. If you plan to see three or four paid sights in a day, work out whether a LuxembourgPass, from about EUR 23 for a day, pays off. It covers attractions only and does not include travel.
If you hike with children in the north or east, they should stay on marked paths and learn never to touch metal objects, because wartime munitions still turn up there.
