Multi-Day Routes Out of Chiang Mai City
Chiang Mai works as a base for single days, but three routes only pay off once you commit to nights away from the city.
The Mae Hong Son Loop (3-5 days, 600 km)
Route 108 out and Route 1095 back string together 1,864 hairpin turns through limestone mountains. Stops include Pai (worth two nights for its canyon, hot springs, and night market), Tham Lod Cave (bamboo rafting through bat-filled caverns), Mae Hong Son town (the lakeside Wat Chong Kham and hilltop Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu), and Ban Rak Thai, a Chinese Kuomintang tea-growing village. Confident riders do it on automatic scooters with a full IDP motorcycle endorsement; anyone less sure should hire a car and driver instead. Chiang Rai and the Golden Triangle (2-3 days)
Day one covers the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun, 100 THB foreign admission), the free Blue Temple (Wat Rong Suea Ten), and the Black House museum (Baan Dam, 80 THB). Day two runs on to Chiang Saen on the Mekong for the Hall of Opium Museum (200 THB, a thorough exhibit on the region’s drug-trade history) and the Golden Triangle tripoint where Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar meet. Chiang Dao (2 days, 1 night)
Seventy-two kilometers north along the Ping River headwaters, Doi Chiang Dao rises to 2,175 meters, Thailand’s third-highest peak and a dramatic limestone karst massif. The Tham Chiang Dao cave system runs over 12 km of passages: the lit outer chambers cost 40 THB entrance, while the unlit inner caverns need a local guide with a lantern for 150 THB. Booking and logistics
