Multi-Day Trips from Alicante: Self-Drive Routes
Search for a multi-day guided coach tour departing Alicante and you will mostly find half-day excursions padded into a listing, because the packaged product simply does not exist here the way it does out of Madrid or Barcelona.
Why there is no packaged option
Alicante is a gateway airport and a day-trip base, not a departure depot. The tour operators that do run multi-day circuits through Spain start their itineraries in the bigger hub cities and pass through the region rather than originating in it. That leaves independent travelers with three honest paths: rent a car, use the high-speed rail line, or build a short island escape around the Tabarca ferry. None of these are things you book as a single product, and no site should tell you otherwise.
Self-drive loop, 3 to 4 days
A rental car turns Alicante into a base for a proper coastal and mountain circuit. A typical route runs north along the coast to Villajoyosa’s painted fishermen’s houses and the whitewashed hill town of Altea, continues to the limestone peak of Peñón de Ifach at Calpe, then turns inland through Callosa d’en Sarrià to swim at Las Fuentes del Algar and finish at the tunnel-entered fortress village of Guadalest, returning to Alicante via the karst caves at Busot. A shorter 2 to 3 day variant follows the Vinalopó castle route instead: Novelda’s triangular-towered Castillo de la Mola, the crag-top fortress at Sax, and the Almohad keep at Villena, with a stop at a Vinalopó winery along the way. Rail combo and the island overnight
Travelers who would rather not drive can pair Alicante with Valencia: the high-speed Euromed line covers the distance in about 1 hour 35 minutes, enough to spend two days in Alicante’s old town and castle before two more in Valencia’s City of Arts and Sciences and old Silk Exchange. A smaller-scale version stays entirely local: take the morning Cruceros Kontiki catamaran to Isla de Tabarca, spend the day snorkeling the marine reserve, and once the day-tripper boats leave in the evening, stay the night on an island that empties out to about 50 residents until the next morning’s ferry.
Do not book a “multi-day Alicante tour” from a marketplace listing without reading the fine print first; more often than not it is a single day trip with an inflated title. Build the itinerary yourself instead, and check road conditions on the CV-70 mountain pass before a spring or autumn drive, since narrow switchbacks are the main hazard on every version of this route.
