Nakuru Tours of Parks, Museums and Castle
As of 31 October 2026, check US State Department, UK FCDO and CDC advice before booking. Kenya is at Level 3 in the US system and an Ebola outbreak is being reported in Nairobi; Nakuru is outside the do-not-travel areas those governments list. Start with the US travel advisory and the UK FCDO Kenya page .
Five visits around Nakuru suit a guide or an organised tour. Pick by interest: animals, archaeology, architecture, volcanic scenery or early human tools.
If you want animals: the park
A licensed operator or your lodge can arrange a drive in a closed vehicle through Lake Nakuru National Park. The guide’s value is local knowledge of where rhinos, buffalo and Rothschild’s giraffes gather, and which sightings are worth the time. Lions and leopards live here too. The park has four of the Big Five, with no elephants.
No walking tours operate inside the park, and no bikes, kayaks or boats are offered. A guide will stop only at the permitted picnic and viewpoint sites. Keep food sealed in the vehicle and never feed baboons.
Ask each operator what the price covers. The park fee is charged per person for 24 hours (USD 90 for a non-resident adult, USD 45 for a child aged 5 to under 18), and a vehicle fee applies on top.
If you want archaeology: Hyrax Hill
This site, about 4 km from town, belongs to the National Museums of Kenya. Neolithic burials and late Iron Age stone enclosures were found at the first excavation, and John Sutton found three Sirikwa houses at the second. The farmhouse museum has three galleries: ethnography, the site itself with a model, and natural history. Booked bird walks are available. Contact details are on the museum site page .
If you want architecture: Lord Egerton Castle
About 52 rooms, built 1938 to 1954 for Maurice Egerton, near Njoro. The tale told locally is that it was built to impress a woman who refused him. A visitor reported paying KSh 250 and finding no guide, so a prepared visit beats a hopeful one. Published fees range from KSh 100 to 860 for Kenyans and USD 5 to 60 for foreigners.
If you want scenery: Menengai Crater
Hire a local guide at the rim. Two routes are described, about 4 km round trip from the viewpoint and about 7 km through the caldera. Steam from geothermal plants rises on the rim. Slippery ash, flash floods after rain and crime on lonely paths are the reasons to have company.
If you want early human tools: Kariandusi
Kariandusi Prehistoric Site near Gilgil is another National Museums of Kenya property, known for Acheulean handaxes. It sits conveniently on the road to Naivasha.
