What to Do in Nakuru Kenya
As of 31 October 2026, check US State Department, UK FCDO and CDC advice before booking. Kenya is at Level 3 in the US system, with an Ebola outbreak centred on Nairobi, and Nakuru is outside the listed do-not-travel areas. Official pages: UK FCDO Kenya and CDC Kenya .
Nakuru is a Rift Valley town with four main draws that fit into two or three days. The table puts them side by side, and the sections after it give the detail you need to plan.

The park drive
Lake Nakuru National Park belongs to the Kenya Wildlife Service and is a short drive south of the centre. You tour it by vehicle only. Lions, leopards, buffalo, black and white rhinos, Rothschild’s giraffes and baboons are the animals to look for. Four of the Big Five live here; elephants do not.
On the bird side, 400 or more species are recorded, with pelicans and fish eagles the easy ones. Flamingo counts across the Rift Valley lakes have fallen in recent years, so a pink shoreline is not something to plan around. Total waterbirds at Lake Nakuru dropped from 22,533 in 2023 to 15,543 in 2025, and the lake is still a good place to bird.
Take binoculars and a warm layer. Dawn is cool at about 1,850 m.
Menengai Crater
The crater rim is close to town, with a view of Nakuru and of geothermal steam plants on the caldera edge. Walking routes exist, one of about 4 km round trip and one of about 7 km that crosses the caldera and ends at London estate. Take a local guide. Ash slopes are steep and slippery, floods follow rain and isolated trails have a crime risk.
Hyrax Hill
The site is on a lava spur about 50 m high, and the museum is a farmhouse with three galleries. The excavation history goes back to Mary Leakey in 1937. Visitors from outside Africa pay KSh 500 as adults and KSh 250 as children; residents and other Africans pay KSh 400 and KSh 200; Kenyan and East African citizens pay KSh 100 and KSh 50. Pay on site or through the National Museums of Kenya online system. Typical hours are 08:30 to 17:30.
Lord Egerton Castle
Maurice Egerton built the castle, which has about 52 rooms, between 1938 and 1954. It stands near Njoro, roughly 15 km off the Nakuru to Eldoret road. Visits are sometimes self-guided, so go with a book or a guide you hire.
Paying for the park
Fees are for 24 hours and one entry. Other categories: African citizens from outside East Africa pay USD 50 per adult, Kenya residents KSh 2,025 and East African citizens KSh 1,500. Children aged 5 to under 18 pay about half, and under 5s are free. Pay in advance on KWSPay , because cash at the gate cannot be counted on. The published schedule is the October 2025 KWS fee list , and the new fees were challenged in the High Court in October 2025, so confirm the price when you pay.
