Walking Midoun, Erriadh and Houmt Souk
Walking is possible on Djerba, but it is not the island’s main draw. This page answers the questions visitors ask most, and it gives an honest picture of what is on foot-scale and what needs a lift.
Is there an old town to walk in Midoun?
No walled medina exists in Midoun. It is a market town on the east side of Djerba Island, and its interest lies in the working streets around the centre. On market days those streets fill with stalls. Ask locally which days and hours apply.
Where are the best places to walk?
Four areas reward a stroll. Midoun’s own market streets are the nearest. The other three are a taxi ride away:
- Erriadh, roughly 15 km west of Midoun. The village lanes hold the Djerbahood murals, an open-air project of about 250 works by more than 150 artists from around 30 countries, dating from the 2014 and 2021 editions. Access is free. Some paintings have faded.
- Houmt Souk, about 16 km north-west. The souk lanes, the Borj El Kebir fortress and the fishing port sit close together, so a loop on foot is easy. The Sidi Zitouni museum in town keeps erratic hours.
- Guellala, roughly 22 km south-west. A walk through the pottery village, with its workshops and hilltop museum, takes in the island’s craft tradition.
Can I join a guided walk?
A local guide in Erriadh is the most useful option. The guide can point out murals, explain the village’s history and brief you on the security arrangements at the synagogue of El Ghriba. That synagogue is a working place of worship and a pilgrimage site, and an armed attack took place outside it on 9 May 2023. Visitors undergo a security check and should carry a passport or ID. Dress modestly and bring your own head covering. Entry is free, with a donation customary. Ask locally about opening times. Do not treat it as part of a casual mural stroll.
How long are the walks?
Plan each area as a short, self-paced loop and add a taxi between them. The island is flat, with its highest point of about 53 m near Guellala, so hills will not slow you down.
What about the heat?
Summer midday is the wrong time to walk. Go early or late, and carry water.
Is anything else on foot?
The grounds of Mosquée Fadhloun in Khazroun reward a short visit. The 14th-century fortified rural mosque stands beside the road from Houmt Souk to Midoun. It opens until midday and is shut all day on Fridays. The heritage village at Djerba Explore stays open until 22:00 and is a low-effort evening walk.
