Victoria Falls Viewpoints, Bridge and Big Tree
Victoria Falls is the headline, but the province also offers a historic bridge, an old baobab and a museum on the shore of Lake Kariba. The way the falls look changes through the year.
The falls through the year
In the wet season the falls run at full flood, and spray makes the rainforest path wet. In the dry season the river is lower and more of the gorge shows. The rainforest is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 1989. Admission is about US$58 for international visitors, US$35 for SADC residents and US$7 for Zimbabwe residents, including VAT, and it is valid for a single entry. Under-12s pay half and under-6s enter free. Confirm fees at the gate.
Lunar Rainbow evenings
The park opens on three nights around the full moon. The Lunar Rainbow ticket costs about US$116 for international visitors. Check the dates for your month before you plan the trip.
The bridge
The Victoria Falls Bridge opened in 1905. If you want to walk onto it without crossing into Zambia, ask at the border post what is required. Shearwater’s bungee jump is 111 m. The Victoria Falls Hotel, built in 1904, is next to the history, and afternoon tea on Stanley’s Terrace runs from about 15:00 to 17:30.
The Big Tree
On Zambezi Drive, about 2 km from town, stands an old baobab called the Big Tree. It is managed by Museums and National Monuments rather than ZimParks.
Binga and the BaTonga Community Museum
The museum opened in the early 2000s. It records the experience of the Tonga people. When Kariba Dam closed in 1958, tens of thousands were displaced from the Gwembe Valley. Visit with respect and spend time listening. Opening hours are about 09:00 to 16:30, Monday to Friday, so check before you travel.
Chibwatata hot springs, about 6 km from Binga, reach about 90 C and matter culturally to the Tonga. The flow has dropped and ZimParks has fenced the site. Do not bathe there.
Binga is on the southern shore of Lake Kariba, about 4 to 5 hours from Victoria Falls on a poor road. The turn-off is at Cross Dete, so plan to stay a night.
Staying safe
- Keep to marked paths at the rainforest edge.
- Never swim in the Zambezi or Lake Kariba.
- Stay off Victoria Falls streets after dark, when elephants and buffalo wander.
