Multi-Day Southern Tunisia Trips from Midoun
Midoun is on Djerba Island, so any multi-day trip begins with a choice: leave the island for the south, or stay and explore Djerba itself. There are three workable options. Prices and journey times for the southern loops vary by operator, and a written itinerary with a total cost is the best protection.
Option 1: Guided 4x4 loop, 2 to 3 nights
A guided 4x4 circuit from Djerba can take in Matmata, Ksar Ghilane, Chenini and Tataouine, Douz and Tozeur. Operators decide how many of these fit your dates. Choose a licensed company, and ask exactly where you will sleep each night.
Before booking, open the FCDO’s regional map. Its warnings cover a band along the Libya border: all travel is advised against in the militarised zone south of El Borma and Dehiba, within 20 km of the border north of Dehiba and around Ben Guerdane, and all but essential travel within 75 km of the border, including Remada and El Borma. Zarzis, the C118 road and Médenine Governorate north of it are excluded from that band. Do not route through Ben Guerdane, Remada or Dehiba.
Option 2: A single night in the south
Short trips to Matmata or Tataouine suit travellers with one spare night. You leave Djerba by the El Kantara causeway or by the Ajim-Jorf ferry, which crosses in about 30 minutes including transfers, runs roughly hourly and is free for people on foot. The ferry also carries vehicles, so ask the operator about fares.
Option 3: A slow stay on Djerba
Djerba rewards time. A base in Midoun gives you four themes for four days:
- Day 1, culture: Djerba Explore, Lalla Hadria museum and heritage village, with tickets about 32 to 37 TND for adults.
- Day 2, villages: Erriadh for the Djerbahood murals, with about 250 works by 150-plus artists, then Mosquée Fadhloun on a weekday morning.
- Day 3, port and market: Houmt Souk, about 16 km from Midoun, with Borj El Kebir and the fishing port. Take the Ras Rmel boat from here if you want flamingos in the cooler months.
- Day 4, crafts and coast: Guellala pottery, then a quiet beach afternoon with attention to flags and supervision.
Travellers who want a spa stay can add the Hasdrubal Prestige Thalassa and Spa or the Radisson Blu Palace Resort and Thalasso, both in the Mezraia and Sidi Mahrez area.
Planning notes
- UNESCO inscribed Djerba in 2023 for its dispersed settlement pattern, a product of water scarcity between the 9th and 18th centuries.
- The Tunisian dinar has three decimals, so a price of 37.000 DT means 37 dinars.
- Fadhloun is closed all day on Friday.
- Tunisia is Level 2 on the US State Department scale.
