Sightseeing in Midoun and Eastern Djerba
Djerba earned a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2023 under the title “Djerba: Testimony to a settlement pattern in an island territory”. The citation, under criterion (v), describes scattered settlements that grew up between the 9th and 18th centuries around the need to collect and conserve water. Midoun, a market town on the east side, is a practical base for seeing that landscape. Here is what to look at, grouped by distance from the town centre.
Closest to Midoun
Djerba Explore and the Lalla Hadria Museum. The museum at Ras Taguermess has 15 galleries and about 3,000 square metres of space, with pieces from the 7th to the early 20th century. Its strengths are ceramics, calligraphy, costume, jewellery and carpets. Tickets cost about 32 to 37 TND for adults. Museum hours run 09:00 to 17:00. The same ticket includes a crocodile area, and sightseers will get more from the museum and village.
Taguermess lighthouse. About 45 to 49 metres high. Visit the grounds, because access inside the tower is inconsistent.
Along the Houmt Souk road
Mosquée Fadhloun, Khazroun. This 14th-century fortified rural mosque has Qur’anic school rooms, a grain mill and a bakery from the 19th century. The hours are 07:00 to 12:00 (1 March to 30 November) and 08:00 to 12:00 (1 December to 28 February). It never opens on Friday. Non-residents pay 5 TND and residents 4 TND. The mosque is a heritage monument on the island. Its interior can be closed while the grounds are open.
Further out on the island
Houmt Souk, about 16 km from Midoun, is the island’s main town. It has the Borj El Kebir fortress, the souk and the fishing port. The Sidi Zitouni museum of popular arts and traditions opens at irregular times. Ask locally for fees and hours.
Guellala, roughly 22 km south-west of Midoun, is a pottery village with a museum on the hill. Hours and fees change.
Erriadh
Erriadh is roughly 15 km west of Midoun and holds two sights of very different character.
Djerbahood is a street-art project with around 250 murals by more than 150 artists from about 30 countries, painted in 2014 and 2021. Some have weathered. Walking the lanes is free.
El Ghriba is an active synagogue and a pilgrimage site, so visit with the solemnity you would bring to any place of worship. Armed attackers struck outside it on 9 May 2023, and the FCDO reports that three security personnel and two civilians died. An earlier truck bombing in 2002 killed about 20 people. Visitors pass a security check and should carry a passport or ID. Modest dress is expected, and you should bring a head covering, because scarves and kippot are not always supplied. Entry is free, though donations are customary. Opening times vary, so ask locally before you go.
