Family Activities in Midoun, Djerba Island
Families staying in Midoun have a short list of dependable outings. All of them sit on the same flat island, so a taxi or hire car links them easily. Planning by age group works well, and the sections below follow that order.
Under 4
Children under 4 enter Djerba Explore free. The park at Ras Taguermess has a museum and a heritage village, and the village stays open from 08:00 to 22:00, so toddlers can go in the cooler evening. The same ticket admits visitors to a crocodile area. The most useful stops for small children are the village and the shady parts of the park.
Beaches need extra care at this age. Some beaches run a flag system. The FCDO advises supervising children even where there is a lifeguard, and it suggests asking locally when no lifeguards, flags or signs are in sight. Treat every stretch of water as untested.
Ages 4 to 12
- Djerba Explore. Children from 4 to 12 pay about 24 TND, against roughly 32 to 37 TND for adults. The Lalla Hadria museum has 15 galleries of costume, jewellery, ceramics and carpets. The museum closes at 17:00.
- Ras Rmel boat trip. Boats leave the Houmt Souk fishing port for the island nicknamed Flamingo Island. Allow about an hour of sailing each way, with a meal on board. Flamingos are seasonal, with the best chance from October to May.
- Guellala pottery. Workshops in this village, roughly 22 km south-west of Midoun, shape and sell clay. A hilltop museum is close by. Ask about fees and hours locally.
Teenagers
Teenagers may like Djerbahood in Erriadh, an open-air project with about 250 murals by more than 150 artists from about 30 countries, painted in the 2014 and 2021 editions. It costs nothing to walk. Some murals have weathered, and photographs are the point of the visit. Kitesurfing is another option for older children. The flat, shallow lagoon on the north-east shore suits learners, and schools include KiteWorldWide Kitecenter Djerba, Kite Aventure and Les Dauphins. Ask each school about age limits and lesson prices.
Heat and health
Summer sun is fierce on Djerba, so plan outdoor visits for early or late in the day. Carry water and sun protection. If you hire quad bikes, remember that standards vary between operators. Helmets are essential.
Getting around
Houmt Souk is about 16 km from Midoun and Erriadh roughly 15 km. A taxi with a waiting driver saves tired legs. Money is in Tunisian dinars, quoted with three decimals.
