Penang Sightseeing, Hill to Coast
Penang’s sightseeing runs from a cool hilltop temple down to sea-level colonial stone, and working it in that direction, high to low, means the heat gets worse only as the day’s harder walking is already done.
Kek Lok Si Temple, Air Itam
Malaysia’s largest Buddhist temple complex spreads across Crane Hill. The seven-tiered, 30-meter Pagoda of Ten Thousand Buddhas mixes a Chinese octagonal base with a Thai middle tier and a Burmese crown, RM 3 to enter; a separate inclined lift to the 36.57-meter bronze Kuan Yin statue runs RM 3 one-way or RM 6 return. Main grounds are free, open daily 08:30 to 17:30.
Penang Hill
From Air Itam, a short Grab reaches the Penang Hill funicular. Malaysia’s oldest British hill station, dating to 1788, sits 833 meters up, with air 4 to 6 degrees cooler than the coast. A standard return is RM 30 for non-Malaysian adults, or RM 80 for the Fast Lane Express, worth it on weekends when standard queues run two to three hours. At the summit, The Habitat’s Curtis Crest platform and 230-meter Langur Way suspension bridge run RM 55 to 60.
Cheong Fatt Tze, the Blue Mansion
Back down in George Town, the Blue Mansion is 38 rooms and 7 courtyards from the 1890s, painted in indigo wash and mixing Feng Shui layout with Scottish cast-iron balustrades. Day visits run only on scheduled 45-minute guided tours at 11:00, 14:00, and 15:30, not free walk-up; RM 25 for non-Malaysian adults. Book ahead at cheongfatttzemansion.com . Fort Cornwallis
On the Esplanade, Francis Light’s 1786 star-shaped bastion holds the 1603 Dutch bronze Seri Rambai cannon and a 21-meter lighthouse; the West Moat, reconstructed after archaeological work, reopened in 2025 to 2026. Open daily 09:00 to 18:00, non-Malaysian adult entry RM 20, a fitting close to a day that started 833 meters above it.
