Planning a Multi-Day Trip to Kaikoura
Planning a few days in Kaikōura
Most visitors spend one to three nights in Kaikōura as part of a South Island loop, so this page is about planning a short stay rather than a long tour. It covers transport, a sample itinerary and accommodation. Prices are in NZD and were checked in October 2026.
Choosing how to arrive
Driving. SH1 links Kaikōura with Christchurch (183 km south, about 2.5 hours) and Picton (154 km north). Blenheim is roughly 130 km north. Floods in July 2026 damaged parts of the road network, so look at NZTA Journeys and the Kaikōura District Council before you set off, particularly for Route 70 inland.
Train. The Coastal Pacific, branded Great Journeys New Zealand and run by KiwiRail, operates daily from 1 September to 30 April. It does not run from 1 May to 31 August, nor on Christmas Day. Northbound trains reach Kaikōura in the morning and southbound trains leave in the afternoon. For times, phone 0800 872 467. See the Coastal Pacific page .
Coach. InterCity coaches stop in Kaikōura daily, and the town has no local bus.
A sample stay of three nights
- First day: a Whale Watch sailing or a scenic flight, then a visit to Fyffe House, whose cottage rests on whale vertebrae.
- Second day: an early dolphin or albatross trip, followed by a section of the Peninsula Walkway.
- Third day: the free Ōhau Point lookout on SH1, a crayfish stop at Nin’s Bin and then the road onward.
Leave a spare morning, since boats cancel in rough seas. Seasickness is the main medical issue, so plan a light first meal.
Loops and long walks
The Alpine Pacific Triangle links Christchurch, Kaikōura and Hanmer Springs, and Whale Watch publishes a map of it. Because it relies on Route 70, confirm the road is open first.
The private Kaikōura Coast Track crosses farmland in Hurunui, and its operator is at 356 Conway Flat Road, Cheviot. Expect two or three days on foot, with luggage carried for you. Listed fares are about $230 for adults and $180 for children, so ask the operator for current details.
Where to stay
- Hapuku Lodge + Tree Houses: on SH1 north of town, with tree houses in a kānuka grove.
- Sudima Kaikōura: 114 Esplanade, a 120-room hotel by the sea with a heated outdoor pool.
- The White Morph: 92 Esplanade, with suites and rooms and some spa baths.
