Planning Several Days in Doha
Check the advisory first (November 2026). Iranian missiles and drones struck Qatar from 28 February 2026, Doha’s airspace was shut for weeks, and passenger flights came back in stages from March to April. Further missile barrages over Doha were reported on 17 July. The UK government does not advise against all travel to Qatar (FCDO Qatar ), though it calls the situation deeply unpredictable. The US State Department has its own advisory. Keep bookings flexible and check insurance before committing to several days.
Why Doha is a hub, not a road trip
Qatar is a small peninsula, so there is no multi-stop road trip that needs a new hotel each night. Doha is the base, and every excursion returns there. A stay of three to five days covers the city, the desert and the north. Plan between November and March; summer heat above 40C limits time outdoors.
A three-day shape
Day 1, the waterfront and the market. Museum of Islamic Art in the morning (closed Wednesdays), a Corniche walk in the cooler hours and an evening in Souq Waqif, where the Falcon Souq is open evenings including Fridays.
Day 2, museums and Msheireb. National Museum of Qatar (closed Tuesdays), then the free Msheireb Museums, closed on Sundays, and Katara Cultural Village for an evening with free entry. Katara is on the Red Line, not on the Corniche.
Day 3, outward. Pick the desert or the north. An Inland Sea trip goes through Sealine with a licensed 4x4 operator. A northern day takes in Al Zubarah Archaeological Site, about 100 km northwest of Doha, and can add kayaking from Purple Island near Al Khor.
Adding days four and five
Spend one day in Education City, where Mathaf is free with a ticket and closed on Mondays and Qatar National Library has free entry. Spend another on Banana Island, reached by catamaran from Al Shyoukh Terminal on the Corniche in about 30 minutes, with a day pass listed at about QAR 395 per adult on the Anantara site . In the evening, Place Vendome Mall in Lusail runs hourly dancing fountains from 19:00 to 23:00.
Overnight in the desert
Operators sell overnight camp stays near the Inland Sea. Details differ by company, so ask who drives, what the camp includes, how many people share and whether the operator holds a licence. FCDO advice is to use a properly equipped 4x4, travel in convoy, carry water and a phone and share your plans.
Costs and passes
Qatar Museums sells a Discover One Pass, reported at about QAR 70 for five days across the main museums, against about QAR 125 at adult non-resident prices for three paid museums; check Qatar Museums for the current offer. The Metro costs about QAR 2 per journey, with a daily cap reported at QAR 6.
Entry and local rules
British citizens on a full passport can obtain a tourist visa on arrival. Other passports vary, so check the official Hayya or Ministry of Interior checker. Alcohol is available only in licensed hotel venues, and dress covers shoulders and knees.
