A Couple's Trip to Dammam and Al Khobar
Check the advice before you book (November 2026). UK FCDO guidance, updated on 27 October 2026, is to avoid all but essential travel across Saudi Arabia, and to avoid all travel within 10 km of the Yemen border. FCDO lists Dammam among the cities at heightened risk from Houthi missiles and drones aimed at airports, military bases, ports and energy facilities. The US State Department tells travellers to reconsider travel and ordered non-emergency US government personnel to leave the country on 23 October 2026. Insurance may not pay out if you travel against FCDO advice. Read the FCDO page and the US State Department page , and confirm flights, tours and opening hours shortly before you travel.
Setting expectations
A couple’s trip here is calm and private. The Gulf at sunset, good seafood and a comfortable resort are the pleasures. Under Saudi public decency rules, kissing, embracing and cuddling in public are offences, and that covers visitors. Keep outings relaxed and discreet, and put the intimate moments behind a hotel or villa door.
Sunset by the water
Walk the Dammam Corniche toward the 1,800 m bridge to Marjan Island and climb the spiral tower of about 30 m for the view as the sun goes down. November to March is the season, with comfortable evenings. In summer the heat passes 40C, so wait until after dark.
Dinner by the Gulf
The Al Khobar Corniche and Ajdan Walk are lined with restaurants and cafes, and the evening rush comes after 16:30. Heritage Village on the Dammam Corniche serves traditional Gulf dishes from noon to midnight, and until 01:00 on Thursday and Friday. No alcohol is sold to visitors anywhere in Saudi Arabia, so think seafood, coffee and sweets.
A resort night or two
Mövenpick Beach Resort Al Khobar on Half Moon Bay Road has villas and a private beach. Swimwear rules are looser at resort beaches and pools than on public beaches, where modest swimwear is the norm. Spas are segregated by gender, so shared treatments are not an option.
Ithra after dark
Ithra in Dhahran hosts concerts, film screenings and talks. Check the programme on ithra.com or the Ithra app. The Center is free to enter, event tickets are separate, and Sunday is a closing day.
Where not to take a date
Working mosques, neighbourhood heritage sites and the castle and harbour on Tarout Island are places of worship or living community heritage. They are not backdrops for photographs of couples. The evening scene here is cafes and restaurants, with no bars or nightclubs.
A fuller trip
If you want more than evenings, add the Ithra tour from SAR 50 by day and a train day to Al-Ahsa Oasis, from SAR 35 each way, booked on tickets.sar.com.sa .
