Things to Do in Dammam: Marjan Island and More
Check the advice before you book (November 2026). UK FCDO guidance, updated on 27 October 2026, is to avoid all but essential travel across Saudi Arabia, and to avoid all travel within 10 km of the Yemen border. FCDO lists Dammam among the cities at heightened risk from Houthi missiles and drones aimed at airports, military bases, ports and energy facilities. The US State Department tells travellers to reconsider travel and ordered non-emergency US government personnel to leave the country on 23 October 2026. Insurance may not pay out if you travel against FCDO advice. Read the FCDO page and the US State Department page , and confirm flights, tours and opening hours shortly before you travel.
A day in three cities
Most visitors treat Dammam, Al Khobar and Dhahran as one area. A sensible day starts with the waterfront in Dammam, moves to Dhahran for Ithra, and ends with dinner on the Al Khobar waterfront. Journeys between them are short by taxi or ride-hailing app. Prices are in Saudi riyals (SAR), which are fixed at 3.75 to the US dollar.
Morning: Marjan Island
Marjan Island is the Kingdom’s first artificial island, reached from the Dammam Corniche by an 1,800 m bridge or by boat. The spiral tower, about 30 m tall, gives you the view, and the island has cafes, restaurants, play areas and parks. Mornings are quiet, and in winter the temperature is comfortable.
Midday: Heritage Village
Heritage Village on the Corniche displays traditional objects and serves Gulf food in its restaurant and cafe. According to Visit Saudi you do not need a ticket to enter. Food service starts at noon and runs to midnight, or 01:00 on Thursday and Friday, so it works well as a lunch stop.
Afternoon: Ithra
Ithra is the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture in Dhahran. Entry to the Center and the Energy Exhibit costs nothing. The Children’s Museum needs a ticket, and the public guided tour begins at SAR 50. The Center is closed on Sundays. Other opening hours differ from day to day, so look at ithra.com before you leave.
Evening: Al Khobar
Al Khobar has its own Corniche and Ajdan Walk, a promenade with restaurants and shops. Families gather at Salt Beach and Playground. Evenings between about 16:30 and midnight are when the area is busiest.
A beach day instead
Half Moon Bay, south of Al Khobar, has about 18 km of white sand, shallow water, free entry, showers and parking. The sea looks calm but is not risk-free: a family drowned here in an area where swimming was prohibited. Swim only where it is allowed, listen to the Border Guard, and keep an eye on children. On public beaches wear modest swimwear. The Mövenpick Beach Resort Al Khobar has a private beach with fewer restrictions on swimwear.
Season, dress and rules
- November to March is the comfortable season. From June to September, 40C and humidity make midday outdoor plans unsafe.
- Alcohol is banned for visitors throughout Saudi Arabia.
- Cover shoulders and knees. Foreign women do not need an abaya or a headscarf in the street.
- Kissing and embracing in public break the decency rules.
- Never photograph oil facilities, ports, military or government sites. Keep drones at home.
- Most visitors use the tourist eVisa from visa.visitsaudi.com .
