Guided Tours and Attractions Around Dammam
Check the advice before you book (November 2026). UK FCDO guidance, updated on 27 October 2026, is to avoid all but essential travel across Saudi Arabia, and to avoid all travel within 10 km of the Yemen border. FCDO lists Dammam among the cities at heightened risk from Houthi missiles and drones aimed at airports, military bases, ports and energy facilities. The US State Department tells travellers to reconsider travel and ordered non-emergency US government personnel to leave the country on 23 October 2026. Insurance may not pay out if you travel against FCDO advice. Read the FCDO page and the US State Department page , and confirm flights, tours and opening hours shortly before you travel.
Few tours, clear choices
Dammam is not a city of tour buses. Getting around means taxis, ride-hailing apps or a rental car, and the organised options are specific: the Ithra guided tour, Heritage Village, licensed-operator trips to Al-Ahsa, and guided visits to Tarout Island and Qatif. Choosing among them is easy once you know what each covers.
Ithra tours
At Ithra, the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture in Dhahran, the public guided tour starts at SAR 50 per person and private tours at SAR 85 per person. You book through ithra.com or the Ithra app. The Center was designed by Snohetta, and a tour is the best way to understand the building. Without a tour you can still enter the Center and the Energy Exhibit free of charge. Sunday is a closing day, and hours vary on other days.
Heritage Village
Heritage Village on the Dammam Corniche is a self-guided stop with a collection of traditional objects, a restaurant and a cafe. Visit Saudi says you do not need a ticket to enter. The restaurant runs from noon to midnight, and to 01:00 on Thursday and Friday.
Al-Ahsa with a licensed operator
Al-Ahsa Oasis was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2018. A guided day covers Al-Qarah Mountain, Qasr Ibrahim, the Al-Qaisariyah Souq and the date-palm gardens, which are spread across a wide area, so a driver and guide save time. Operators in the Eastern Province sell this trip with different inclusions and prices, so ask what the fee covers. The independent alternative is a train from Dammam to Hofuf at SAR 35 or more each way, taking roughly 1.5 to 2 hours, with seats reserved on tickets.sar.com.sa or the SAR app.
Tarout Island and Qatif with a guide
The Qatif area north of Dammam includes Tarout Island, where a castle stands on a hill and the harbour at Darin lies at the southern end. A guide from the area can explain the history and what is open, since a government restoration plan for the island was approved in 2022. This is a living community, so dress modestly and do not photograph religious gatherings.
Choosing and booking
- Prefer operators licensed by the Saudi tourism authorities and ask to see the licence.
- Confirm the price, pick-up point, entry fees and language of the guide in writing.
- Pick early-morning or evening slots from June to September.
- Expect tours to change or cancel at short notice while the regional advice stands.
Rules to remember
- Alcohol is illegal for visitors, so no tour offers it.
- Dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees.
- Refineries, port gates and official buildings are off limits for photographs.
