Three Days Around Dammam, Dhahran and Al-Ahsa
Check the advice before you book (November 2026). UK FCDO guidance, updated on 27 October 2026, is to avoid all but essential travel across Saudi Arabia, and to avoid all travel within 10 km of the Yemen border. FCDO lists Dammam among the cities at heightened risk from Houthi missiles and drones aimed at airports, military bases, ports and energy facilities. The US State Department tells travellers to reconsider travel and ordered non-emergency US government personnel to leave the country on 23 October 2026. Insurance may not pay out if you travel against FCDO advice. Read the FCDO page and the US State Department page , and confirm flights, tours and opening hours shortly before you travel.
How to use three days
A good itinerary here is compact. One day for the Dammam waterfront, one for Dhahran and Al Khobar, and one on the train to Al-Ahsa. You can stay in one hotel throughout. If you have an extra half day, add Tarout Island and Qatif. Leave Bahrain out: crossing the King Fahd Causeway means passport control at both ends, a toll of SAR 35 per car, and visas for both countries, and the crossing has closed at short notice during 2026.
Day one: waterfront and lunch
Start at the Dammam Corniche and walk the 1,800 m bridge to Marjan Island for the view from its spiral tower, about 30 m high. Have lunch at Heritage Village, where Visit Saudi lists no entry ticket and food from noon, until midnight on most days and 01:00 on Thursday and Friday. Spend the late afternoon on the Corniche when the light softens.
Day two: Dhahran and Al Khobar
Go to Ithra in the morning or early afternoon. The Center and the Energy Exhibit are free, the Children’s Museum needs a ticket, and the guided tour begins at SAR 50. Remember that Ithra is closed on Sundays. Hours vary on other days, so look at ithra.com first. Then drive to Al Khobar for the Corniche, Scitech if you have children, and dinner at Ajdan Walk.
Day three: Al-Ahsa by train
Board an early train from Dammam Railway Station to Hofuf. Tickets cost from SAR 35 one way and the ride takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. Reserve in advance at tickets.sar.com.sa or in the SAR app. In Al-Ahsa, UNESCO listed the oasis in 2018. Visit Al-Qarah Mountain, Qasr Ibrahim and the Al-Qaisariyah Souq, then catch an evening train back.
Optional half day
Tarout Island and Qatif lie north of Dammam. A castle stands on a hill in the middle of Tarout, and Darin is at its southern end. A restoration plan is under way, so see the castle from outside.
Where to sleep
Choose a hotel on the Dammam or Al Khobar waterfront. For a beach resort, Mövenpick Beach Resort Al Khobar offers villas and a private beach on Half Moon Bay Road. Compare rates on a booking site, as seasonal prices vary.
