Sibiu as a Base for a Transylvania Road Trip
Using Sibiu as a base for several days
Sibiu does not stretch into a week of its own. Two days cover the squares, the main museums and the open-air museum. After that, the sensible move is a loop through Saxon Transylvania by car, returning to Sibiu or ending in Brașov. The notes below are short on purpose, because the choice is mostly about how much you want to drive.
Two days in town
Day one. Walk Piața Mare, Piața Mică and Piața Huet, climb the Evangelical Cathedral tower and visit Brukenthal Palace. Day two. Take bus 13 to the ASTRA open-air museum and the zoo, then wander the Lower Town by the Cibin. The Council Tower is closed for restoration until about the end of 2027, so the cathedral tower is the one to climb. Most Brukenthal branches shut on Mondays and Tuesdays in winter.
A three or four day Saxon loop
By car, the route runs Sibiu, Biertan, Sighișoara, Viscri and Brașov.
- Biertan, 67 to 70 km from Sibiu, takes 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes. UNESCO inscribed it in 1993.
- Sighișoara, about 90 km away, has a UNESCO historic centre with a free citadel to walk.
- Viscri, about 116 km and 1 hour 50 minutes from Sibiu, belongs to the same UNESCO fortified church group as Biertan.
- Brașov has the Black Church and Council Square, and it is about 114 km from Sibiu.
There is no train to the villages. Rail reaches Mediaș, Sighișoara and Brașov, so a car is the practical choice for Biertan and Viscri. Check train times with CFR Călători. The UNESCO page for the fortified church villages explains the listing.
The mountain road option
The Transfăgărășan and Transalpina high sections are open only in summer, roughly from June or July to late October. Road authority CNAIR closed the Transfăgărășan high section on 27 October 2026 and the Transalpina on 26 October 2026, and either may stay closed until next summer. Use CNAIR and Infotrafic to check before any plan that depends on them. There are chalets near Bâlea Lake, but whether they open year-round is not confirmed.
Bears live on these roads. Keep food sealed and never stop to feed or photograph a bear. Feeding wild bears is illegal and the fines are heavy.
Winter alternatives
Păltiniș, about 35 km from Sibiu, has the Arena Platoș ski area, and Tursib bus 22 runs there. Pair a ski day with the Christmas Market in Piața Mare, open 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027.
Hire car and rooms
Sibiu airport has car rental firms. A car is essential for the villages and mountain roads. Base yourself in Sibiu for most nights, and compare rooms on Booking.com . The airport transport page lists the city buses that serve the terminal.
