Sibiu Activities From ASTRA to Salt Lakes
What to do in Sibiu, season by season
Sibiu has two sides. From November to April the plan is indoor museums, concerts, the Christmas Market and skiing at Păltiniș. From May to September you can add lake days, open-air heritage and long evenings on the squares. Here is how the main options line up.
All year
ASTRA Museum of Traditional Folk Civilization. It spreads through the Dumbrava forest about 4 km from the centre and shows relocated rural buildings from across Romania. Entry is 50 RON for adults, 20 RON for pensioners and 10 RON for pupils and students. Opening hours are 08:00 to 20:00 from May to September and 09:00 to 17:00 from October to April. Cyclists may enter 08:00 to 10:00 and 15:00 to 17:00. The inn at gate 2, Cârciuma din Bătrâni, serves food from 09:00 to 17:00 daily in the off-season. The museum’s own site, muzeulastra.ro , lists current events.
Brukenthal museum branches. Each branch has its own ticket. The Palace is 50 RON, Casa Altemberger 36 RON, Natural History 20 RON and the Pharmacy Museum 16 RON. Four branches open Wednesday to Sunday 09:00 to 17:00 on the winter schedule, and summer hours may differ, so check the museum site .
Food and markets. The local cheese is Telemea de Sibiu, made from raw sheep’s milk with EU protected status. Common dishes are ciorbă ardelenească, varză călită and plăcintă. Crama Sibiul Vechi, in a vaulted cellar on Strada Alexandru Papiu-Ilarian, charges about 45 RON for most dishes. Restaurant Hermania on Strada Filarmonicii offers a Saxon and Transylvanian menu. Piața Cibin, at the north-west end of Strada Turnului, is open daily and accepts cards.
Summer only
Lacul Binder. This lake complex in Sibiu has wakeboarding, water skiing, cable ski, kayak and SUP rental, a volleyball beach, fishing and lifeguards. In 2026 it opened on 1 May and ran Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 20:00. In 2025 the beach cost 15 RON for adults, and wakeboarding was 25 RON for 10 minutes. Swimming had not opened at the start of the 2026 season, so confirm on laculbinder.ro .
Ocna Sibiului salt lakes. About 15 to 20 km from the city, they open from 22 May to 30 September in 2026. Adult entry was about 25 RON in the shoulder weeks and about 35 RON from 7 June to 31 August, with parking about 10 RON. Visitors bathe in salt water and use the mud.
Zoo Sibiu. At Calea Dumbrăvii 142 the zoo charges 20 RON for adults and 10 RON for children from age 3. Rowing boats on the small Dumbrava lake cost 50 RON for 30 minutes.
Winter
The Christmas Market in Piața Mare runs from 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027 with free entry. Păltiniș, about 35 km away, has the Arena Platoș ski area and a Tursib bus, route 22, for about 11 to 12 RON one way.
Good to know
The Council Tower between Piața Mare and Piața Mică is closed for restoration until about the end of 2027, so use the Evangelical Cathedral tower for a view. Tursib city buses charge 3.5 RON for 60 minutes, and Sibiu has no trams or trolleybuses today. Carry some RON for kiosks and church donation boxes.
