Day Trips From Yerevan Grouped by Time
Travel advice, October 2026. The UK FCDO says not to travel anywhere within 5 km of the eastern border with Azerbaijan, or on the M16/H26 road between Ijevan and Noyemberyan. The US sets Armenia at Level 2 and names the Azerbaijan border region as a no-go area. The destinations here lie outside those zones. Read gov.uk and travel.state.gov before you leave and stay on the main roads.
The trips below are grouped by how much of the day they take. Distances are measured from central Yerevan.
Half day: Garni and Geghard
This pair in Kotayk is 28 to 30 km out, and Geghard is another 10 km along the same valley. Garni Temple is a Hellenistic-style colonnaded temple from the 1st century, rebuilt in the 1970s. It is commonly described as the only standing temple of its kind in the former USSR. Foreign adults pay about 1,500 AMD and Armenian citizens about 750 AMD. Nearby, the Symphony of Stones basalt columns cost about 200 to 300 AMD to enter, and climbing on them is prohibited. Geghard is a free UNESCO monastery, with parking at about 200 AMD. The Garni gorge is not a UNESCO site.
For the cheapest ride, take minibus 266 (or 284) from Gai station in Nor Nork. The trip takes about 40 minutes and costs 250 to 500 AMD. The bus ends at Goght village, about 3 km short of Geghard. Check the departure point before you set out.
Half day: Echmiadzin and Zvartnots
Vagharshapat, better known as Echmiadzin, is a separate city 20 km west of Yerevan. The drive takes 30 to 40 minutes. The Mother Cathedral reopened in September 2024. The Treasury is 2,000 AMD for foreigners and opens Tuesday to Sunday 10:30 to 17:30. Marshrutkas run from Kilikia station for about 400 AMD. The UNESCO-listed ruins at Zvartnots charge about 1,500 to 2,500 AMD, and the site may be closed on Mondays, so check first.
Full day: the Ararat plain and Vayots Dzor
Khor Virap is about 45 km from Yerevan and free to enter. The monastery sits a few hundred metres from the closed Turkish border fence, and a steep ladder leads down to the pit. Areni is 110 to 115 km away and Noravank about 120 km, so the round trip is long. Areni-1 is a dig site with an ancient wine press, with entry of about 1,000 AMD. Noravank’s grounds are free, its parking costs about 100 AMD, and a museum on site is about 500 AMD. The two-storey Surb Astvatsatsin church has an exterior stair that is steep and has no handrail. Do not stop in Yeraskh village.
Full day: Sevan and Dilijan
Sevan is about 65 km away, or 1 to 1.5 hours, and Dilijan is 95 to 100 km, or 1.5 to 2 hours. At 1,900 m the lake is chilly, with water between roughly 15 and 24 C in July and August, and winds can rise fast. In Dilijan, Haghartsin, Goshavank, Parz Lake and the Sharambeyan Street craft quarter make a full day. Do not travel past Vardenis on the lake’s eastern side.
Very long day: Tatev
A one-day Tatev trip is about 250 km each way and takes 4.5 to 5.5 hours in each direction, 12 to 14 hours in all. Staying in Goris overnight makes it a pleasant trip rather than an endurance test. Use the main road and the Halidzor cable car.
Gyumri
Armenia’s second city can be reached by train or marshrutka. The timetable is on the national railway site.
