Sightseeing in Port of Spain and Tobago
Travel advisory, October 2026: the US State Department asks travellers to reconsider travel to Trinidad and Tobago because of crime, and the UK FCDO describes violent crime as high. The FCDO names downtown Port of Spain, Carenage, Sea Lots, Belmont, Laventille, Morvant, Beetham, Barataria, Cocorite and the interior of Queen’s Park Savannah as places for particular caution. Keep city visits to daylight, book registered taxis, avoid walking alone at night, and read the UK advice and the US advisory before you commit to dates.
Three routes for sightseeing
Sightseeing in this country falls into three routes, each on its own island or part of one: the capital, the central and southern belt of Trinidad, and Scarborough on Tobago. Costs are in Trinidad and Tobago dollars (TT$).
Route 1: Port of Spain
- Red House. The home of Parliament, reopened in January 2020 after restoration. Free tours are held on Mondays and Thursdays at 10:00, 11:00 and 13:00, and you must book by phone on +1 868 624-7275.
- Magnificent Seven. These grand houses and institutions line Maraval Road. Queen’s Royal College is a school, Hayes Court was built for the Anglican Bishop, and the Archbishop’s Palace is still the Archbishop’s residence. Whitehall holds the Prime Minister’s office. Roomor, also called Ambard’s House, is a private home. Stollmeyer’s Castle is state-owned and has no regular public hours. Mille Fleurs has housed the National Trust since 2020 and opens by appointment. Look from the pavement rather than expecting interiors.
- Queen’s Park Savannah. A daytime stop only, since the FCDO lists its interior as a caution area.
- Cenotaph, Memorial Park. On Upper Frederick Street, it is a memorial and calls for quiet respect.
Route 2: Central and South Trinidad
- Temple in the Sea, Waterloo. Begun in 1947 by Sewdass Sadhu and completed in 1952, then rebuilt in 1995. It is a working temple, so cover shoulders and knees and leave your shoes at the entrance.
- Hanuman Murti, Carapichaima. The statue is 85 ft tall, was consecrated in June 2003 and is said to be the tallest Hanuman statue outside India. Listed hours are 09:00 to 12:00 and 17:00 to 19:00, with shoes off.
- Pitch Lake, La Brea. About 40 hectares of the largest natural asphalt deposit in the world. Hours are listed as Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 17:00, so confirm before you drive down. Take a guide from the visitor centre and ignore unlicensed touts nearby.
- Caroni Swamp. Evening boat tours go to the scarlet ibis roost. Prices differ by operator and pickup.
Route 3: Scarborough, Tobago
- Fort King George. The British fort dates from the late 1700s, and entry to the grounds is free.
- Tobago Museum. Open on weekdays, usually 09:00 to 16:30, and closed at weekends. Entry is about TT$10 to TT$20.
Crime is lower on Tobago than on Trinidad but not absent, so use the same common sense with bags and phones.
Before you go
- Plan Port of Spain stops for daylight on weekdays and use registered taxis between them.
- Carry TT$ cash for admissions and taxis.
- Hours at several sights change, so call or check before a long drive.
