Planning Jamaica Day Trips by Region
Advisory: both the UK FCDO and the US State Department (Level 2) describe Jamaica as having high levels of violent crime, with the worst of it in inner-city districts, and they name neighbourhoods in Kingston, Spanish Town and Montego Bay to avoid. On any day trip, travel with a hotel-booked or JTB-approved driver and leave isolated places alone. Western Jamaica is still recovering from Hurricane Melissa (October 2025). Read gov.uk and travel.state.gov .
A day trip in Jamaica works when it stays inside one region. The island is about 235 km long and 80 km wide at most, but winding mountain roads and traffic stretch the drive times quoted here, which are approximate. Route taxis and the Knutsford Express coach (stops include Kingston, Montego Bay, Falmouth, Ocho Rios, Port Antonio and Negril, with fares on its site ) are cheaper than private drivers, but avoid buses after dark.
From Montego Bay: Falmouth and Martha Brae (about 35 minutes)
Rafting on the Martha Brae takes 75 minutes on flat water, and the raft holds two adults plus one small child. It runs every day from 9:00 to 16:00. Falmouth’s Georgian streets are a short walk away, and the cruise port reopened on 2 December 2025. After sunset, boats go out to the Luminous Lagoon; pick a dark night.
From Ocho Rios: falls, caves and the Blue Hole
Dunn’s River Falls (US$25 for an adult non-resident), Mystic Mountain, Green Grotto Caves and the Blue Hole, also called Island Gully Falls, are all within reach of Ocho Rios. Jumps at the Blue Hole are optional, and visitors should weigh up the water conditions and their own ability. Coming from Montego Bay means roughly 105 km each way, about 1.5 to 2 hours, so a base in Ocho Rios saves hours on the road.
From Kingston: Port Royal
Drive to Port Royal, where the ferry no longer operates. Walk Fort Charles, built in the late 1650s, and the Giddy House, tilted by the 1907 earthquake. Reported admission is around US$15 for adults and US$8 for children. Head back to Kingston before dusk. Stay clear of the inner-city districts listed in the advisories.
From Kingston: the Blue Mountains
Holywell, a Jamaica Conservation and Development Trust recreation area, and the coffee farms of the hills suit a day out. Reaching the 2,256 m summit of Blue Mountain Peak takes far more, since the 18.6 km round trip needs about 7 hours and most people set off after midnight. The visitor trail fee is US$20. The path’s post-hurricane state is unconfirmed.
From Negril or Montego Bay: the south coast
YS Falls, Appleton Estate and a Black River boat tour can be strung together on a very long day that operators sell, with about 1.5 to 1.75 hours of driving each way to YS Falls. Both Black River and Appleton were hit hard by the hurricane, so confirm they are operating. Floyd’s Pelican Bar, reached by boat from Parottee in St Elizabeth, would add more hours. Take cash.
From Port Antonio: Portland
- Rio Grande rafts: two-person bamboo rafts leave Berridale or Grant’s Level for Rafters Rest (2 to 3 hours). The agency’s September 2023 rates were J$12,000 (long) and J$10,000 (short) per raft, and may have gone up. Pay at the Berridale or Rafters Rest offices only.
- Reach Falls: about 45 minutes east of the town, Wednesday to Sunday, US$10 for adults and US$5 for children. Phone 876-276-8663 to find out whether it has reopened.
- Frenchman’s Cove: entry was reported at about J$2,000.
Trips that need an overnight
Kingston, Negril and Ocho Rios do not combine in one day, since the drives alone add up to more than 10 hours. Montego Bay to Port Antonio and Kingston to Pelican Bar are also too far for a day.
