Sightseeing in Jamaica from Kingston to Rose Hall
Advisory: Jamaica is at Level 2 (“Exercise Increased Caution”) with the US State Department, and the UK FCDO says gang violence is concentrated in inner-city areas, with robbery the usual motive against tourists. Both name neighbourhoods in Kingston, Spanish Town and Montego Bay to avoid. Western Jamaica is also recovering from Hurricane Melissa (October 2025). Book drivers through your hotel or the Jamaica Tourist Board, and read gov.uk and travel.state.gov .
The main sights in Jamaica are a music museum, an 18th-century great house, a buccaneer-era fort town and a few waterfalls. They are spread across three regions, so plan one region per day. Foreign visitors pay US dollars at the big sites.
Kingston: Marley and Tuff Gong
At 56 Hope Road the Bob Marley Museum runs hourly Home Tours, Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 16:00; it is shut on Sundays and some holidays. Adults pay US$25, children 4 to 12 pay US$12, and under-4s go free. Plan 75 minutes, including a 20-minute film, and note the narrow stairs (tour details ). The recording-studio tour belongs to a different site at 220 Marcus Garvey Drive (US$20 adults, half-hourly from 9:30). A combined “One Love” ticket costs US$40 and does not cover the ride between the two.
The Trench Town Culture Yard, where Marley lived in the 1960s, is government-run and sits in an inner-city area covered by the advisories. Go only on a guided trip booked in advance, and never wander the streets around it. Nine Mile, in the St Ann hills, is Marley’s birthplace, with an entrance fee reported at about US$30 to US$35.
Kingston: Devon House
Devon House was built in the 1880s for George Stiebel. Visitors come for the grounds and the ice-cream shop. Opening hours and charges are unconfirmed, so check ahead.
Port Royal
The old port at the mouth of Kingston Harbour was known as the richest and wickedest city in the world until the earthquake of 7 June 1692. Henry Morgan died here in 1688. Fort Charles was the first fort on the site, and the Giddy House lurches because the 1907 earthquake tilted it. Expect to pay about US$15 as an adult (US$8 for a child), according to one guide, and the gates are open 9:00 to 17:00. There is no ferry, so travel by road. Heritage trust page .
Rose Hall, near Montego Bay
The Day and Garden Tour of the great house is available Monday to Saturday from 9:15 to 16:00, for about US$30 per adult and US$10 to US$12 per child. Guides tell the story of Annee Palmer, known as the White Witch. Cameras stay in the bag inside. The house has stairs and is not wheelchair accessible. Cinnamon Hill Great House, the former home of Johnny and June Cash, has its own tour on weekdays at about US$25. See rosehall.com .
Reach Falls and the waterfalls
Reach Falls, near Port Antonio, is open Wednesday to Sunday between 8:30 and 16:30 and charges non-resident adults US$10. Its reopening since the hurricane is unconfirmed, so call 876-276-8663. Dunn’s River Falls in Ocho Rios is open daily and about US$25 for an adult, and it reopened on 11 November 2025.
