Jamaica for Couples: Sunsets and Bamboo Rafts
Advisory: the UK FCDO warns of high violent crime in Jamaica and says some British visitors report rape and sexual assault in tourist areas, including beach resorts, often by someone they met socially. The US State Department lists Jamaica at Level 2. Negril, Montego Bay and the rest of the west are still repairing damage from Hurricane Melissa (October 2025). Read the official pages at gov.uk and travel.state.gov .
Couples will find a handful of dependable romantic experiences in Jamaica, but no organised honeymoon circuit and no hotel list in this guide. Several western hotels reopened between December 2025 and mid-2026, so look up each property’s current state before booking. Start your search on Booking.com and ask about power, water and construction.
The experiences worth planning around
- Martha Brae raft for two. The operator describes the 75-minute drift as a couples’ ride. A licensed captain poles a 30-foot bamboo raft for 3 miles through Trelawny, about 30 minutes from Montego Bay. It leaves daily from 9:00 to 16:00. No per-raft price is published, and resellers with transport charge roughly US$90 to US$180 per person. (Operator FAQ )
- Sunset at Rick’s Cafe. The West End venue in Negril has served drinks with live music since 1974, daily from noon to 22:00, with no cover. Divers go off the cliffs and injuries are reported, so take a terrace table and leave the jumping to others. (Rick’s Cafe )
- Rose Hall after dark. The Haunted Night Tour near Montego Bay runs Wednesday to Saturday evenings, US$35 per adult, and needs a reservation. It lasts 45 to 60 minutes, includes no cocktail and does not provide transport. It is a bad fit for anyone with back trouble.
- A night on the water. Luminous Lagoon boats from Falmouth glow best on dark nights and weakly under a bright moon. They last about 30 to 45 minutes, and resellers quote US$90 to US$185 with transfers.
- Rum tasting. The Appleton Estate tour in St Elizabeth ends in a tasting room, Tuesday to Saturday, 9:00 to 15:30. The estate was badly damaged, so ring 876-448-2237 first.
Beach time
Negril’s Seven Mile Beach is roughly 7 miles (11 km) long. Long Bay Beach Park, one public entrance, charges non-residents about US$3 and is open 9:00 to 17:00. Choose busy, staffed stretches over empty ones.
Spas and dinners
Spa treatments and private dinners are arranged through hotels, so ask each property directly what it offers and whether it is operating. Avoid booking anything that needs an unlicensed driver or an isolated meeting point.
Staying safe
- Ride only in JTB-approved or hotel-booked taxis with a photo-ID driver.
- Skip isolated and deserted beaches, especially after dark.
- Use licensed operators for water and boat trips.
- Keep your room number to yourselves.
- Take out cash in daylight.
