Asa Wright, Caroni and Argyle Falls Tours
Travel advisory, October 2026: the US State Department asks travellers to reconsider travel to Trinidad and Tobago because of crime, and the UK FCDO describes violent crime as high. The FCDO names downtown Port of Spain, Carenage, Sea Lots, Belmont, Laventille, Morvant, Beetham, Barataria, Cocorite and the interior of Queen’s Park Savannah as places for particular caution. Keep city visits to daylight, book registered taxis, avoid walking alone at night, and read the UK advice and the US advisory before you commit to dates.

Asa Wright in detail
The centre in the Northern Range is run by HADCO, which took over the concession in 2022 and has operated it since April 2023. Visitors aged 13 or over pay TT$550, ages 6 to 12 pay TT$275, and younger children enter free. The day pass buys access to the trails and pools, a 45-minute guided Discovery Trail walk, lunch with a non-alcoholic drink and afternoon tea. Around 256 species of bird have been logged. Oilbirds live in Dunston Cave, and visits there are guided with controlled access and no flash, so ask when you book rather than assuming they are included. Reserve through HADCO Experiences or by phone on +1 868 675-5364.
Caroni Swamp at sunset
The sanctuary protects about 5,611 hectares of mangrove and marsh and was named a Ramsar site on 8 July 2005. Scarlet ibis, Trinidad and Tobago’s national bird, gather here to roost, and it is the biggest roost of that species. Nanan’s Bird Sanctuary Tours, on its own website , has operated since the 1930s. Prices differ by operator, so ask for a final price that includes any hotel pickup.
Argyle Falls and the Cocoa Estate
Both sit in the Roxborough area of Tobago. Argyle is the island’s tallest waterfall at roughly 54 m, and the TT$60 fee is paid at the Roxborough Visitor Service Co-operative booth with a tip expected for the guide. The Tobago Cocoa Estate on Cameron Canal Road is open on published dates, chiefly November to April, or by appointment. Ages 12 to 18 pay TT$100 and children under 12 pay TT$60. The 60 to 75 minute tour ends with cocoa tea and a rum and chocolate sample. Email info@tobagococoa.com at least 72 hours ahead and bring exact change.
Main Ridge and the zoo
The Main Ridge Forest Reserve dates from April 1776 and is often called the oldest legally protected forest reserve in the Western Hemisphere. Gilpin Trace guides are licensed. Emperor Valley Zoo, on Zoo Road in St Clair, holds more than 200 species and is known for ocelots and giant river otters.
