Romantic Tobago and Trinidad for Two
Travel advisory, October 2026: the US State Department asks travellers to reconsider travel to Trinidad and Tobago because of crime, and the UK FCDO describes violent crime as high. The FCDO names downtown Port of Spain, Carenage, Sea Lots, Belmont, Laventille, Morvant, Beetham, Barataria, Cocorite and the interior of Queen’s Park Savannah as places for particular caution. Keep city visits to daylight, book registered taxis, avoid walking alone at night, and read the UK advice and the US advisory before you commit to dates.
What a romantic trip looks like here
Trinidad and Tobago does not offer a long menu of couples’ experiences, and what exists is simple and daytime-led. The strongest choices are on Tobago, with one standout afternoon in Trinidad’s Northern Range. There is no evening reef cruise, and the best nights are spent in a quiet cottage rather than at a dinner show. Amounts are in Trinidad and Tobago dollars (TT$), roughly TT$6.8 to US$1.
A slow weekend on Tobago
Friday and Saturday, Castara. Base yourselves in a hillside cottage in the fishing village of Castara. Castara Retreats is listed on the large booking sites. Watch the seine-net pull in the morning, then walk or drive to Englishman’s Bay, which is calm and undeveloped. On Thursdays the village holds a bonfire, which makes that night the one to be in town.
Sunday, Pigeon Point. Pay TT$20 per adult (about US$3) at Pigeon Point Heritage Park and walk to the thatched jetty late in the day. The beach has shallow, reef-sheltered water, no surf and no party boats. Jet skis are restricted. Kitesurfing and paddleboarding are on the park’s list of activities for energetic couples.
One afternoon in the Northern Range
At Asa Wright, the TT$550 adult day pass covers a guided Discovery Trail walk, lunch and afternoon tea served on the verandah, with the grounds open from 09:00 to 17:00. Overnight stays are possible in the 29-room lodge. Reserve at HADCO Experiences .
Optional extras
- Buccoo Reef by private boat, by day. Tours are allowed only between 10:00 and 17:30. Alcohol is not allowed on reef tours, so a champagne cruise is off the table. Choose a registered, insured operator and buy tickets at the authorised booths.
- Tobago Cocoa Estate. A cocoa tour in Roxborough takes 60 to 75 minutes and ends with a rum and chocolate sample. It costs TT$150 (US$25) per adult, cash only, and runs on published dates between November and April. See tobagococoa.com and email at least 72 hours ahead.
Dinner
Ask your cottage host or hotel where to eat that week.
Staying safe as a pair
The FCDO reports drug-assisted robbery, including through dating apps, so keep an eye on your drinks and be wary of new online contacts. Avoid isolated, poorly lit places and deserted beaches, and use cash machines by day. On Trinidad’s north coast, Maracas and neighbouring beaches have rip currents and thin lifeguard cover, so swim only where lifeguards are posted.
