Couples in Yerevan: Opera, Lovers' Park, Areni
Couples in Yerevan do best with an evening plan: a glass of wine early, a show or a walk after dark, and one slow day in the countryside. Read the current Armenia notices on gov.uk and travel.state.gov before booking, and steer clear of political demonstrations.
Early evening: Saryan Street
Wine bars cluster on Martiros Saryan Street. In Vino, at number 6, opened as the pioneer here and is a bar and a shop with a list of more than 1,000 labels. Reserve a table on Friday or Saturday nights. If you visit in the first week of June, Yerevan Wine Days fill Saryan, Tumanyan and Moskovyan streets, and the Areni Wine Festival follows in early October.
After dinner: the opera or the fountains
The Armenian National Opera and Ballet Theatre stands on Freedom Square. Seats vary widely with the production, with listings from about 1,000 AMD up to 28,000 AMD for headline shows such as Gayane and Anoush. Smart dress is the norm, and the theatre’s site at opera.am lists the programme. On warm nights from spring to early autumn the fountains at Republic Square run a free show from about 21:00, which makes a short walk after dinner.
Dusk on the Cascade
Climb the Cascade when the lights come on and look out over the pink tuff city. The outdoor terraces never close, and the escalators inside usually run daily from 08:00 to 20:00. Cascade Royal is at the top of the staircase. Mount Ararat shows on clear days, and the best view of it is in the early morning.
Planning the evening
Friday and Saturday are the busiest nights, so book dinner and any opera seats a few days ahead. A simple order works well: wine on Saryan Street first, then a walk to Freedom Square for a performance, then the Cascade lights on the way back.
A park for two
Lovers’ Park was designed by the Swiss landscape architect Pierre Rambach in a Japanese style and opened in 2008. Entry is free, and it suits a slow afternoon stroll.
A day in Areni wine country
Areni is about 110 to 115 km from the capital, so give it a whole day. Hin Areni has tasting rooms, and the Areni Wine Factory dates from 1994. Tasting prices vary, so ask when you book. Stay on the main road and skip Yeraskh village. The ancient wine press at Areni-1 is an excavation you can visit for about 1,000 AMD, but it is not a place to taste.
Where to stay
A room in the centre means a walk back from Saryan Street or Freedom Square. Search rooms on Booking.com for Yerevan .
