A Southern Armenia Loop and More From Yerevan
Travel advice as of October 2026: the UK FCDO tells travellers not to go within 5 km of Armenia’s eastern border with Azerbaijan, or along the M16/H26 road linking Ijevan and Noyemberyan. The US puts Armenia at Level 2 and bars travel to the Azerbaijan border region. The itineraries below avoid those areas and use main roads. Look at gov.uk and travel.state.gov before you book, and do not take side roads in Syunik or Tavush.
Trips that last more than a day work best when you pick one direction and commit to it. These options start and finish in Yerevan.
Option 1: stay put for 4 or 5 nights
A single base lets you see most of the country without packing and unpacking. Spend the outing days on Garni and Geghard, on Khor Virap with Areni and Noravank, and on Echmiadzin. Fill the days between with the Matenadaran, the History Museum, the Cascade and the Saryan Street wine bars. Both the 3-day plan and the 4-day plan show how to sequence them.
Option 2: the south in 2 days
On the first day, visit Khor Virap, then Areni-1 and Noravank. After that the road crosses the Vorotan Pass at 2,344 m, with a stop at Zorats Karer, also known as Karahunj, near Sisian. The night is in Goris, close to the Stone Forest.
On the second day, ride the Wings of Tatev cable car from Halidzor up to Tatev Monastery. The line runs 5,752 m in about 12 minutes, runs Tuesday to Sunday and shuts on Mondays and in poor weather. March to November tickets are 6,500 AMD one way and 9,000 AMD return, and December to February they fall to 4,000 AMD one way and 5,500 AMD return. Tickets are non-refundable, with a 14-day exchange window for unused e-tickets. Hours stretch to 19:00 from May to September and to 18:00 in the shoulder and winter months. Stop at Shaki Waterfall near Sisian on the drive home. Stay on the main road, and do not go east of Goris or south of Kapan. See Wings of Tatev for the live schedule.
Option 3: Sevan and Dilijan
One or two nights covers Lake Sevan and Dilijan. Hikers can follow the roughly 6.5 km route from Lake Parz to Goshavank. Haghartsin monastery and Sharambeyan Street complete the stay. Keep away from the Ijevan to Noyemberyan road and the villages near Ijevan.
Option 4: the Lori loop
Head north to Haghpat and Sanahin, two UNESCO monasteries, and add a rafting run on the Debed if you want one. Spend the night in Alaverdi or Dilijan. Rafting Armenia charges about 12,000 AMD per person for 11 km and 1.5 to 2 hours, with riders aged 14 and over. Booking is through tumanyan.town .
Option 5: Gyumri
Gyumri is a simple overnight stop by train or marshrutka. Look up the railway timetable before you commit.
Where to sleep
Goris is the key stop on the southern loop, so reserve a room there early. Compare options at Booking.com for Goris .
