Uganda Honeymoon and Couples Lodges

Advisory as of October 2026. The US State Department lists Uganda at Level 4, Do Not Travel; it was raised in May 2026 during an Ebola outbreak that Uganda has since declared over, and the listing also refers to crime, terrorism and unrest. The UK FCDO does not advise against travel to the whole country but says terrorists are very likely to attempt attacks, including in national parks. Same-sex sexual activity is illegal under the Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023 and can bring long prison terms. See the FCDO safety page and the US listing first.

A Lodge-Led Trip

Couples in Uganda plan around where they sleep: a ridge above a rainforest, an island in a river, a lakeside cabin. Expect high prices at the better lodges, quoted in US dollars. Because journeys between regions take most of a day, two or three nights per lodge is a sensible minimum.

Forest Ridges at Bwindi

Gorilla Forest Lodge in Buhoma reopened in 2025 after a rebuild. Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge in Nkuringo has eight stone-and-thatch cottages on a ridge, and the views take in volcanoes. Each gorilla permit belongs to a single sector, and sectors lie two to four hours apart over rough road, so sleep in the sector you will trek in. Permits cost about USD 800 each (about USD 600 in April, May and November) and trekkers must be 15 or older. Escorts accompany groups near the Congo border.

The Nile Near Jinja

Wildwaters Lodge occupies an island in the river, and a transfer from Jinja costs about USD 70. The lodge is at wildwaterslodge.com . Jinja is 2 to 4 hours by road from Kampala.

Murchison Falls

Nile Safari Lodge stands on the south bank and offers bandas. A private pool comes only with the Family Banda, so confirm what your room includes before you book. Its site is nilesafarilodge.com . A launch cruise to the foot of the falls costs about USD 30.

An Island With Chimpanzees

Ngamba Ecolodge has tented cottages on Ngamba Island, about 23 km south-east of Entebbe, and guests can take sunset cruises. Speedboats leave Entebbe at 09:00 and 12:45 and the crossing takes about 45 minutes. Book through chimpanzeetrust.org .

Lake Bunyonyi

The terraced hills of Bunyonyi rise around a lake near Kabale at about 1,960 metres. Lodges line the shore and canoe trips are the usual activity. Take lifejackets, and ask your lodge whether swimming is advised. The name is often translated as place of little birds.

Water to Avoid

Do not swim or snorkel in Lake Victoria, the Nile or around the Ssese Islands. Bilharzia, hippos and crocodiles make those waters a poor choice, and a lodge terrace is a better view.

Practical Notes

Many lodges organise transfers, and light aircraft from Entebbe reach Kihihi, Kisoro, Pakuba and Mweya; check schedules. After dark, FCDO advises staying off roads outside main towns. Bring your yellow fever certificate and check entry rules for your nationality and route.
