5 days: 2 city days, then a full Bromo-Ijen circuit
Five days is enough to properly cover Surabaya’s Heroes history, Old Town, and food on the first two days, then run a genuine Bromo-Ijen volcano circuit for the rest of the trip rather than rushing either mountain. This is a real commitment of both money and schedule; budget roughly Rp 300,000-500,000 a day for the city portion and considerably more for the volcano days, detailed below.
Day 1: Heroes history
Tugu Pahlawan and the 10 November Museum (free grounds, modest museum fee, verify) start the day, followed by Hotel Majapahit’s facade on Jalan Tunjungan, free to view. Afternoon: the Al-Akbar Mosque, free entry, its 99m minaret worth the visit. Warung lunch and dinner, rawon first.

| Bed | 200,000 | 500,000 |

Day 2: the Old Town and House of Sampoerna
Morning in the Arab Quarter around the Sunan Ampel Mosque, dressing modestly; afternoon at the House of Sampoerna’s kretek museum and café (verify current open status), then Kya-Kya Chinatown for an evening food walk.
| Day 2 cost (Rp, per person) | Low | Higher |
|---|---|---|
| Bed | 200,000 | 500,000 |
| Breakfast | 15,000 | 30,000 |

| Day 2 total | 295,000 | 720,000 |
Day 3: Mount Bromo sunrise
Head out via Probolinggo (roughly 3-4 hours) to Cemoro Lawang, staying overnight near the park for the pre-dawn jeep ride to the Penanjakan viewpoint and the Sea of Sand, then the roughly 45-minute walk to the crater rim. Check current PVMBG alert status before booking. Book a Bromo sunrise tour ahead in dry season.
| Day 3 cost (Rp, per person) | Low | Higher |
|---|---|---|
| Transport to Cemoro Lawang + overnight bed | 250,000 | 450,000 |
| Bromo jeep tour + park entry (verify) | 300,000 | 600,000 |
| Meals | 40,000 | 80,000 |
| Day 3 total | 590,000 | 1,130,000 |
Day 4: on to Kawah Ijen
Travel on toward Banyuwangi, the gateway to Kawah Ijen, arriving in time for another overnight before a second pre-dawn start. The crater-rim hike runs about 2 hours up, with a further descent for those viewing the blue fire up close; carry a gas mask, the sulfur gas is a genuine hazard, not an exaggeration.
| Day 4 cost (Rp, per person) | Low | Higher |
|---|---|---|
| Transport to Banyuwangi + overnight bed | 250,000 | 450,000 |
| Ijen hike + guide + gas mask (verify) | 500,000 | 800,000 |
| Meals | 40,000 | 80,000 |
| Day 4 total | 790,000 | 1,330,000 |
Day 5: back to Surabaya
Travel back to Surabaya, roughly a full day given the distance from Banyuwangi. Use any remaining time before your flight out of Juanda Airport for last-minute food, a warung meal rather than an airport café.
| Day 5 cost (Rp, per person) | Low | Higher |
|---|---|---|
| Transport back to Surabaya | 150,000 | 350,000 |
| Meals | 30,000 | 60,000 |
