First-Timer Venice: 7 Days, Lagoon and All
A first week in Venice, staying in the lagoon
Seven days is a proper first week, and this plan keeps it all in Venice and its lagoon rather than chasing the mainland. You get the core sights, all three islands, a local sestiere, an art day, a beach day and a quiet last morning. Budget roughly EUR 40 a day plus your bed; a 7-day vaporetto pass (about EUR 65) covers the boats.
Day 1: San Marco and the Rialto
The free Basilica nave with a booked slot, the Rialto Bridge and market, and a EUR 12 to 18 cicchetti dinner.
Tip: reserve the Basilica the night before.
Day 2: the Doge’s Palace and the Grand Canal
The Doge’s Palace at EUR 30 to 35 with the Bridge of Sighs, then Line 1 down the Grand Canal.
Tip: the advance rate needs booking about a month out.
Day 3: Murano, Burano and Torcello
All three islands, exempt from the access fee. Burano first, before the crowds.
Tip: take a packed lunch to keep the cheapest day cheap.
Day 4: Cannaregio and the Ghetto
The 1516 Ghetto and the local Strada Nova, with the best-value eating in the city.
Tip: cross on a EUR 2 traghetto instead of walking to the nearest bridge.
Day 5: Dorsoduro’s art
The Accademia (around EUR 15) and the Peggy Guggenheim, then the Zattere at sunset.
Tip: book the Accademia ahead in summer.
Day 6: the Lido and Sant’Erasmo
A nature day: the Lido’s free beach and the flat garden island of Sant’Erasmo.
Tip: confirm the last boat back before you set off.
Day 7: San Giorgio Maggiore and Giudecca
Finish quietly: the San Giorgio Maggiore bell tower for a cheap lagoon view, then a slow walk on Giudecca and a last morning at the Rialto Market.
Tip: the market closes by early afternoon, so go before noon.
