Abu Dhabi Itineraries for Three Days or More
Travel advisory: A trip of several days gives the security situation more time to change, so read this first. In 2026 the UAE became a target in the conflict between Iran and the United States: missiles and drones were launched at the country from 28 February, and debris from intercepted weapons fell in parts of Abu Dhabi. Britain’s FCDO reports renewed strikes and retaliation across the region since 8 July and warns of the chance of escalation. It does not currently advise against travel to the UAE, but the US State Department keeps the country at Level 3, “Reconsider Travel”. Expect possible flight delays and temporary airspace closures, and choose refundable hotels where you can. When a UAE alert reaches your phone, go indoors and away from windows. Posting video of strikes or interceptions is illegal. The FCDO travel advice and the State Department advisory are the pages to consult. The itineraries here assume a calm period.
Abu Dhabi’s attractions cluster in four areas: downtown, the Grand Mosque district, Saadiyat Island and Yas Island, with roughly 15 to 25 km between them. A longer stay is easiest if you give each area its own day. Costs use the UAE dirham (AED), which is fixed at about 3.67 to the US dollar. Between May and September, schedule outdoor stops for early or late in the day, because highs reach 40 to 46 degrees C.
Option 1: three days in the city
Day one, mosque and old fort. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque has charged visitors from outside the UAE AED 10 since September 2026, but its guided tours are free. It opens Saturday to Thursday from 9am to 8:30pm and on Friday from 9am to 11:30am and again from 2:30pm to 8:30pm. Cover your arms, legs and hair. Afterwards, Qasr Al Hosn, the city’s oldest stone building, opens Saturday to Thursday 9am to 8pm and Friday from 2pm, at about AED 30 to 35. Check hours on the mosque centre site .
Day two, Saadiyat Island. Louvre Abu Dhabi has AED 70 adult tickets, and Zayed National Museum, open since 3 December 2025, is about AED 70 as well. teamLab Phenomena, which opened in April 2025, sells timed entries from about AED 150. The Guggenheim Abu Dhabi has an announced opening date of 11 December 2026.
Day three, Yas Island. Choose from Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World, SeaWorld Yas Island or Yas Waterworld. A single-park day ticket generally starts around AED 295 and can reach AED 375, with online and weekday discounts. CLYMB’s skydiving tunnel is the island’s other draw.
A full plan is in the 4-day Abu Dhabi itinerary .
Option 2: city plus a night in Al Ain
Al Ain is about 90 minutes by car. Sleeping there frees up a morning at the oasis, an evening on Jebel Hafeet and time at the zoo. Reports say the Mercure Grand Jebel Hafeet is the mountain’s only hotel.
Option 3: Sir Bani Yas overnight
The island is about 250 km west of the capital. The route is roughly 2 hours by car to Jebel Dhanna, then a short boat crossing, adding up to about 3 to 3.5 hours. Visit Abu Dhabi lists wildlife drives, kayaking, snorkelling, diving, horse riding and the ruins of an ancient church and monastery. Visit Abu Dhabi names Anantara resorts on the island, though you should confirm they are currently open. The seaplane service Seawings, about 45 minutes, is also listed, but its current status is unchecked. See Visit Abu Dhabi .
Option 4: Liwa and the Empty Quarter
Liwa is 2.5 to 3 hours from the city and about 250 km away. Tal Moreeb is about 25 km beyond. Check that any desert resort you favour is operating.
