Antigua Attraction Tours and Island Day Sails
Most attraction tours in Antigua are either on the water or around English Harbour, with Barbuda as the one long outing. Cruise passengers will meet many of these as shore excursions, and independent visitors can often book the same tours directly or through a reseller. Prices below are in US dollars and are advertised figures, so confirm them when you book. The local currency is the Eastern Caribbean dollar (EC$2.70 to US$1).
Stingrays and tortoises
A boat-led tour from Seatons Village on the north-east coast reaches the Stingray City sandbar, where guides feed squid to the rays in waist-deep water. Handling follows the guides’ rules, and rays stay in the water. One operator sells a combination with Laviscount Island, where Aldabra tortoises and macaws live, for about US$150.
Catamaran day sails
A catamaran company named Wadadli Cats offers sails to Bird Island, Cades Reef and around the island. The sails last 6 to 7 hours. A listing for a Friday Bird Island sail shows US$95 for adults and US$48 for children.
Zip lines on Fig Tree Drive
Antigua Rainforest Canopy Tour lies just beyond John Hughes village. It has zip lines, suspension bridges and rope obstacles, with departures at 9am, 10am and 11am from Monday to Saturday. Resellers charge anything from about US$99 to US$158, so compare them. Email inquiries@antiguarainforest.com or phone 268 562 6363 to check the day’s departure.
A day on Barbuda
Hillside Tours is the operator that Sea Bridge Ferries recommends. Its day includes the frigatebird sanctuary at Codrington Lagoon, the Two Foot Bay caves and pink-sand beaches, and lunch at Hillside View Bar and Grill. The ferry from Antigua takes about 90 minutes, and a one-way adult ticket starts at about US$65. Weather can cancel sailings. The Codrington Lagoon colony numbers about 2,500 pairs, making it the largest magnificent frigatebird colony in the Caribbean. Arrangements go through Sea Bridge, which gives +1 268 464 5012 for Hillside Tours.
English Harbour and Shirley Heights
Island tours from the cruise port commonly pair Nelson’s Dockyard National Park with Shirley Heights, with the pass included. Independent visitors pay about US$15 (EC$40) for the adult heritage pass. The Dockyard is UNESCO listed, and the park opens 8am to 5pm Monday to Saturday.
Betty’s Hope
Guided visits to Betty’s Hope are available, and they should be treated as visits to a place of forced labour. Enslaved Africans worked this 18th-century sugar estate, which the Codrington family owned from 1674 to 1944. A single windmill tower has been restored, the Great House is in ruins, and a visitor centre occupies the former cotton-house store. Opening hours vary by listing, so ask before you travel.
Wadadli Animal Nature Park
At Lower Lyons in Saint Philip you can see monkeys, deer, peacocks, parrots and iguanas. A booking is needed 48 hours ahead through 268 736 2895, and it is wise to ask whether guided visits are running.
