Azerbaijan with Kids: Gentle Days Out
Safety note for parents. The British FCDO recommends against all travel within 5 km of Azerbaijan’s Armenian border, and against all but essential travel to the south-western districts left mined by the 2020 and 2023 fighting. The US advisory is Level 3, Reconsider Travel. Land crossings with Armenia and Russia are closed, and families fly in. All the outings below are in Baku or the northern and western mountains, away from those districts. Read gov.uk and travel.state.gov before you book.
Azerbaijan is not built around children’s attractions, and there is no long list of purpose-made family venues with confirmed details. What follows is a short, honest set of outings that work for children, split by weather. Prices are in manat (AZN) for a foreign visitor, at about 1.70 to the US dollar.
When it is hot or wet
Carpet Museum. On Baku Boulevard, closed Mondays. Schoolchildren pay about 3 AZN and adults 10 AZN, though children’s ticket rules are worth confirming at the desk. Some galleries may be shut. See the ticket page .
Maiden Tower and Palace. In the Old City, daily 10:00 to 19:00. Children aged 5 to 17 pay 9 AZN at the tower, which has eight floors, and 12 AZN at the Shirvanshahs’ Palace Complex. Adults pay 19 and 24 AZN.
Mini Gobustan. An interactive tour at the Gobustan museum, about 5 AZN. It pairs with the rock-art trail on a cooler day.
Outdoors
Yanar Dag. The gas fire at Mammadli, on Absheron, has a playground, an amphitheatre and a museum. It is open daily from 10:00 to 19:00, adults pay 15 AZN, and foreign children under 12 are free. Every child needs an adult alongside, and the rules on smoking, litter and damage are strict. Hold small hands near the flames. The reserve page explains the rules.
Baku Boulevard. A free seafront promenade, with the Baku Eye Ferris wheel and Little Venice. Take the funicular up to Highland Park for about 1 AZN, and enjoy the free view of the bay.
Gobustan. About an hour from Baku, entry about 10 AZN. The site has no shade, so go early with water and hats. Children must stay on the marked trails and must not climb on or touch the carvings.
Summer in the mountains
- Shahdag, near Qusar: a coaster and a zip-line, with pedestrian lift tickets at 15 and 16 AZN for children and 20 and 22 AZN for adults. Prices for the rides themselves are on the resort site .
- Tufandag, above Gabala: rope lines, a mountain swing and archery, with children’s quad tours listed. Check its site for prices.
Logistics
A metro ride is 0.60 AZN. Bolt and Yango work in Baku, and the FCDO warns that some taxis overcharge, so agree the fare first. Choose one main outing a day. If you want a guide, search Baku tours .
