Family Days in Tbilisi
Advisory, as of October 2026. British FCDO guidance is to avoid all travel to the Russian-occupied regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia and to make only essential trips close to their boundary lines. Demonstrations against the government have run for more than a year in the centre of Tbilisi, mainly outside the Parliament on Rustaveli Avenue, and have at times turned violent, most often on Saturday evenings and on political anniversaries. Stay away from them. Look at the current FCDO page on Georgia and at travel.state.gov before booking anything.
Parents should know early that Tbilisi offers few purpose-built attractions for children. The city is better suited to short, varied days: a ride, a park, a puppet clock and long family lunches. Below are the options that exist, with honest notes on their limits. Fees come from secondary sources, so check them locally.
A funfair above the city
Mtatsminda Park is the main children’s destination. Its attractions include a large Ferris wheel of about 80 m, carousels and small coasters, with pine woods around the rides. Walking in is free, and each ride is paid for from a Mtatsminda Park card, priced about 2 GEL and not refundable, as is any leftover credit. Reach the top by the 1905 funicular from Chonkadze Street or by the Rustaveli Avenue cableway, open since October 2024. Each one-way ride costs about 10 to 12 GEL. If you start from Rustaveli, avoid Saturday evenings, when protests may be under way.
The clock tower on Shavteli Street
Children enjoy the lopsided clock tower at the Gabriadze Theatre. Each hour an angel taps a bell, and a tiny puppet scene appears in a high window at 12:00 and 19:00. Watching is free. Seats for full shows are limited, so look at the theatre’s page well ahead.
Garden stroll
The National Botanical Garden costs about 4 GEL for adults, and a family ticket is about 6 GEL. Its paths, bridges and 22 m waterfall suit a slow hour, though steps and edges need watching with toddlers. The gate closes between about 17:30 and 19:30 depending on season.
Turtle Lake
A short ride above Vake Park, Turtle Lake has easy paved loops, cafes and paddle boats. Boat and cable car fares have not been confirmed, so ask when you arrive.
Waterpark
Gino Paradise, near Tbilisi Sea, is a waterpark that stays open every day until about 22:00. Weekend prices are higher, advance online purchase is advised and children under 6 enter free.
Zoo notes
The older zoo in the Vere ravine remains open, and a new site near Tbilisi Sea is opening in phases with conflicting dates. Check opening news before planning around it.
Water safety
Tbilisi Sea has cold currents, a steep bottom and a recent teenage drowning in August 2026. Keep children to supervised pools. The river through the centre and the Vere stream are not safe for play, and the Vere can rise quickly after storms.
Beyond the list
Family options are limited, so mix them with cafes and unhurried walks in the old town. A search for family tours in Tbilisi can show guided choices.
