Sarajevo for Couples: Viewpoints and Dinners
Sarajevo rewards slow evenings more than packed itineraries. Narrow bazaar lanes, lamp-lit courtyards and ridge-top viewpoints do most of the work, and costs stay modest. Prices here are in convertible marks (BAM), about 1.96 to the euro. Cash helps in tea houses and craft shops.
Dusk above the minarets
The Yellow Fortress, an 18th-century bastion north of the bazaar, is free and open at all hours. A steep climb leads up from Baščaršija, so wear sturdy shoes and carry a light for the way back. In Ramadan a cannon marks the end of the daily fast from the walls.
If you prefer a gondola, the Trebević cable car climbs from Bistrik in about seven minutes. A return ticket for tourists is 20 BAM and a one-way ticket is 15 BAM. Hours change with the season and the last car down varies, so look at zicara.ba and leave the summit well before dark. At the top, stay on paved paths and marked routes. The hills still hold mines from the 1990s, so do not wander into woods or abandoned buildings.
Dinner
Inat Kuća, at Veliki Alifakovac 1, is a 19th-century house with carved ceilings and woven rugs, a long-running restaurant; check opening hours. It is known for the tale of an owner who would not give up his home for the new City Hall, and so the house was rebuilt across the river. Typical dishes include stuffed vegetables and roast veal. Reserve for weekend evenings.
For something more casual, Gastro Pub Vučko serves in a room decorated with the 1984 Olympic wolf mascot.
Music and theatre
The National Theatre on Obala Kulina bana dates from 1897. Opera, ballet and drama play in the season, with tickets reported at about 10 to 30 BAM. Check the programme before you go, since performances are not on every night.
Tea, coffee and courtyards
Morića Han is the last Ottoman caravanserai in the city, built in 1551 around a cobbled courtyard. Nearby, Čajdžinica Džirlo at Kovači 16 serves tea and Bosnian coffee, cash only. A coffee is around 3 to 4 BAM and comes with a piece of lokum.
In Kazandžiluk you can watch coppersmiths at work and buy a hand-hammered coffee set as a keepsake.
Staying overnight
The old town puts everything within walking distance. For a night in the centre, Sarajevo accommodation is a place to compare rooms. Spring and early autumn have the clearest air, because the valley fills with smog from November to February.
