Family Friendly Activities for Ecuador Trips
Safety notice for travellers, October 2026: Check two government sources before booking Ecuador: the UK FCDO page and the US State Department advisory . At the time of writing the FCDO advises against all but essential travel to the coastal provinces of Esmeraldas, Manabí, Santa Elena, Guayas, El Oro, Los Ríos and Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas (airside transit at Guayaquil airport is excepted) and to the 20 km Colombian border strip, which takes in Lago Agrio. The US rates the country Level 2 overall, with Level 3 and Level 4 areas named inside it. A 60-day state of exception that began on 15 September 2026 covers eight provinces, Pichincha and Quito among them, and curfews have returned more than once this year. The highlands, Cuenca and the Galápagos fall outside the FCDO regions. Even there, plan around muggings, bag snatching, express kidnapping after street-hailed taxis and heavy El Niño rain and landslides. Everything on this page concerns places outside the warned areas.
Ecuador works for families when the days are short and the pace is gentle. Altitude, cold wind, rain and road safety matter more than distance, so the options below favour places with clear rules, official fares and plenty of rest stops.
Planning for altitude
- Quito: about 2,850 m. Cuenca: about 2,560 m. Quilotoa rim: about 3,900 m.
- Keep the first days easy, push fluids and skip strenuous hikes on arrival.
- If a child has a headache, vomiting, confusion or breathlessness at rest, go down and get help.
- Pack hats, gloves and windproof layers for cable car and volcano days.
Cable car and equator stop
- TelefériQo: children ride from 18 months. The single (non-resident) fares are US$9.00 for adults and US$7.00 for under-18s. The trip lasts about 18 minutes, from 3,117 m to roughly 3,950 m. The cable car does not run in bad weather, so keep the plan flexible. Hours are on the official page .
- Ciudad Mitad del Mundo: US$2.50 for children, US$5.00 for adults. It has a planetarium, a train museum and open plazas around a 30 m monument.
Gentle volcano walk
Laguna de Limpiopungo in Cotopaxi National Park has a flat loop of about an hour at around 3,800 m. Entry is reported to be free, and you register at the ranger gate with passports. No bus goes there, so a tour or taxi is needed. Check the IG-EPN Cotopaxi page before you set out, and skip the steep refuge scree path with young children.
Cloud forest at Mindo
About 2 hours from Quito, Mindo has a butterfly farm (about US$8) and chocolate tours (about US$10). Zip-lines and canopy walks have killed visitors in Ecuador, so pick a licensed operator and ask to see harness checks.
Galápagos with children
- Park fee: US$100 for foreign children under 12, nothing for under-2s, US$200 for those over 12.
- Transit Control Card: US$20 at the CGREG counter in the Quito or Guayaquil airport.
- Free stop: the Charles Darwin Research Station exhibition hall, open 08:00 to 18:00 daily, with whale skeletons and the history of the tortoise breeding programme.
- Rules: keep 2 m from animals, no flash and no feeding. Travel health insurance is mandatory, and Isabela has only a very basic health centre.
Where to avoid with children
Skip the Pacific coast and Lago Agrio. Both lie inside government advisory areas, and coastal beaches often have no warning flags and strong currents.
