Gdańsk Adventure Tours You Can Do Yourself
A packaged adventure tour from Gdańsk can be worth paying for, but the three trips below are easy to run yourself, and doing so leaves more of the budget for the parts that cost money.
Hel: pick the boat, not the car
The Hel Peninsula is a thin spit of sand and pine about 35 km long, and the town of Hel sits at its tip. It is around 100 km from Gdańsk by road, which takes 2 to 2.5 hours, and the train takes about the same.
The cheap and scenic way is the seasonal water tram run by Żegluga Gdańska from the Długie Pobrzeże quay. It takes about 1h50, and 2026 fares were reported at about 30 PLN regular, 18 PLN reduced and 5 PLN for a bike. A faster catamaran exists, but at about 105 PLN one way or 160 PLN return it costs more than three times as much. Sailings and the season are on zegluga.pl . A bike on the boat is the best value of all, because the spit is flat.
Once there, the Fokarium seal station is the main stop. It belongs to the University of Gdańsk, opens daily at 10:00 all year, and closes between 16:00 and 18:00 depending on the month. Check fokarium.ug.edu.pl for feeding times. The 41 m lighthouse and the Laskowski Battery bunkers are close by.
A packaged tour makes sense only if you want a fixed return time in writing. Compare Hel day trips on Viator against the boat fare before you book one.
Malbork: use the free day wisely
Malbork Castle, the Teutonic Order’s fortress and the world’s largest brick castle, is a train ride of roughly 25 to 60 minutes from Gdańsk Główny, depending on the train. On Monday entry is free, but you get only the Grounds route. That is still a long walk between huge brick walls, and for anyone on a strict budget it is a genuine free day out.
The full Historical route costs more. In the 2026 spring-summer season, from 25 April to 30 September, it was 80 PLN regular and 60 PLN reduced, with the Grounds route at 35 PLN and 25 PLN. A guide or audio guide comes with the ticket, so a paid tour adds transport and little else. Autumn and winter prices start on 1 October and are listed on zamek.malbork.pl , where online tickets are also sold.
Sobieszewo: free, if the weather cooperates
Sobieszewo Island, on Gdańsk’s eastern edge, is a nature reserve area with two bird sanctuaries, Ptasi Raj and Mewia Łacha. The adventure here costs a bus fare. After strong north or north-easterly gales in autumn and winter, pieces of raw amber wash up in the seaweed on the beach. Go the morning after a storm, walk the tideline and keep off the dunes. A ZTM single ticket is 4.80 PLN, and routes are on ztm.gda.pl .
What each trip costs
| Trip | Self-guided cost |
|---|---|
| Sobieszewo amber walk | one city bus ticket each way |
| Malbork on Monday | train fare only, grounds free |
| Hel by water tram | about 30 PLN each way, in season |
| Hel by fast catamaran | about 105 PLN one way |
The verdict
Hel by water tram with a bike is the best-value adventure from Gdańsk. A paid tour is worth considering only for Hel in poor weather, when a fixed return saves you from watching the timetable. If one day feels rushed, search Hel stays on Booking.com and take the boat back the next morning.
