Ghana Itineraries of 3 to 11 Days by Road and Air
Multi-day trips in Ghana
The number of days you have decides the route, because distances are large and the roads are slow. Sorted by trip length below, each route carries fares so you can compare coach and plane. Figures are in cedis (GH₵); the rate was about 11.7 per US$ on 1 October 2026 and shifts, so treat dollar equivalents as approximate.
Three to four days: Accra and the coast
Spend a day in Accra (Jamestown, Makola Market, the Teshie coffin studios), then ride the Intercity STC coach to Cape Coast in 3.5 to 4.5 hours for about GH₵90 to GH₵130; schedules are at stc.gov.gh . Do Kakum’s canopy walk (7 bridges, 333 m, up to 27 m, guided, 06:00 to 16:00, fee at the gate) the next morning. Cape Coast Castle admission for foreign adults is about GH₵80, to be confirmed at the gate, and the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board lists both castles at gmmb.gov.gh .
The castles at Cape Coast and Elmina are sites of remembrance for the transatlantic slave trade, so keep a quiet half day for the visit and follow the guides.
Six days: add Kumasi
From the coast, head north to Kumasi. Coaches from Accra take 4.5 to 6.5 hours for about GH₵120 to GH₵160, and flying from Kumasi back to Accra takes 40 minutes at around GH₵900 and upward. In Kumasi, see the Manhyia Palace Museum, then Bonwire (Kente) and Ntonso (Adinkra). Finish at Lake Bosomtwe before returning. Compare Kumasi hotels on Booking.com .
Nine to eleven days: add Mole
With more time, travel overland from Kumasi to Tamale, stopping at Kintampo Waterfalls, and spend two nights at Mole National Park. Fly Tamale to Accra, about an hour, with fares commonly cited at GH₵1,200 to GH₵1,900 via Africa World Airlines . Mole entry is GH₵60 for foreign adults; guided walks are GH₵20 per person per hour and led by armed rangers. By road from Accra the park is about 690 km and 10 hours away, so the flight is the practical route. The US advises reconsidering travel to parts of northern Ghana, including areas of the Savannah Region; check travel.state.gov and the FCDO page for Ghana first.
For hikers: the Volta Region
Volta offers Wli Waterfalls, with a drop of about 80 m, and Mount Afadjato at 885 m, Ghana’s highest peak. Allow three to four days from Accra and a local guide for the climb.
Practical advice
Paperwork comes first: UK and US passport holders must hold a visa, requested through the government’s e-visa site, evisa.immigration.gov.gh , which shows the current fee. Carry your yellow fever certificate, because it is required and otherwise you may be turned back or vaccinated at the airport. Get malaria advice from a doctor or travel clinic before departure; the risk covers the whole country, including the coast and Accra. Open-coast beaches face the Atlantic, where rip currents and powerful waves cause drownings every year; a hotel pool or sheltered lagoon is the safer choice for weaker swimmers. Cedis in cash cover most gates and street food, mobile money is common, and cards work at larger Accra hotels and restaurants.
Verdict: six days is the best balance of sights and travel time. Use the 4-day itinerary as a template or check the day trips page for shorter outings.
