Panama City Canal Cruises and Guided Attractions
A ship rising 54 feet inside a lock is the sight most visitors want from a tour. Panama City’s guided options split into water, history and culture, and each has a clear price band.
On the water
- Partial canal transit. A 5 to 6 hour cruise leaves from Flamenco Marina, passes under the Bridge of the Americas and goes through the Miraflores and Pedro Miguel locks. Prices run about $130 to $170 per person, with lunch and commentary; check the operator, since one listing shows $155 for adults.
- Full transit. A 10 to 12 hour crossing from Pacific to Caribbean costs about $180 to $220.
- Gatún Lake monkey boat. A fast boat trip to jungle inlets with capuchin, howler and tamarin monkeys, around $35 to $55 per person.

History and culture
- Casco Viejo walking tour. Two hours with a local historian through colonial alleys, churches and courtyards, about $15 to $25.
- Afro-Antillean Museum. A wooden mission church from 1910 explains the contribution of the West Indian workers on the canal.
- Mola art tour. Guna cooperatives in Casco Viejo sell and explain the layered reverse-appliqué panels.
- Emberá village. A full-day trip by canoe up the Chagres River, roughly $85 to $130, with lunch and music.
Ticketed sites you can tour on your own
- Miraflores Locks. Open daily 08:00 to 18:00; tiered prices of $7.22 to $17.22. Details at Visit Canal de Panamá .
- Biomuseo. $20 for non-resident adults; closed Mondays.
- Panamá Viejo. $15 for foreign adults; open Tuesday to Sunday 08:30 to 17:30. This is the 1519 ruin site about 10 km east of Casco Viejo.
Timing the canal
Cruises run on set days, so confirm the date with the operator. Wear a hat and bring a light jacket, because the deck is breezy and the sun is strong. Boats board at Flamenco Marina on the Amador Causeway, so allow 20 to 30 minutes from the old quarter by Uber and arrive 30 minutes before departure.
How to choose a tour
- Ask what is included: lunch, transfers, entry fees and the tax-inclusive price.
- Confirm the departure point, which is Flamenco Marina for canal boats.
- Choose small groups for the walking tour; the old streets are narrow.
- Pay in US dollars; carry small bills for guides’ tips.
Safety
Use Uber between Casco Viejo and downtown after dark, and stay inside the restored quarter.

Verdict: the partial transit is the best-value way to be inside the locks; book it for a weekday when ships are most frequent.
