Island Ferries and Overnight Stays From Split
Overnight trips from Split: what exists
Split has no fixed multi-day tour programme to point you to. It is a ferry port, so longer trips here are put together by the traveller from sailings and rooms. Three patterns work: an island chain by catamaran, a stay on Vis, and a loop through central Dalmatia.
Everything on the water is seasonal. Fast boats run from about April to October, and by the end of October many lines are already finished for the year, so check the operator first. The fares below are rounded and based on published 2026 tables.
Pattern 1: the island chain
Link Split, Hvar, Korčula and, if you have the days, Dubrovnik. These boats are for foot passengers, since catamarans carry no cars. Book ahead for July and August.
| Leg | Time | Fare |
|---|---|---|
| Split to Hvar Town | about 1 hour | about €10 to €25, by operator |
| Hvar to Korčula | check the operator | about €11 to €25 |
| Korčula to Dubrovnik | about 1 hour 40 minutes | about €25 |
Budget about €10 to €30 per leg. Jadrolinija’s Split to Hvar page shows the Hvar schedule, and Krilo is the other main operator. Strong wind can cancel crossings, so keep a buffer day at the end of the trip.
Pattern 2: two or three nights on Vis
Vis was a military base closed to foreigners until 1989. Komiža is the usual base for the Blue Cave on Biševo.
- Getting there: the ferry from Split takes about 2 to 2.3 hours at about €7.50 off-peak and about €9.10 in summer. A catamaran takes about 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes. Kapetan Luka costs about €7 to €10, and the Jadrolinija catamaran, mid-June to mid-September, about €28 on one table.
- On the island: Tito’s Cave on Mount Hum is a hike of roughly 1.5 to 2 hours from Komiža. A submarine tunnel from the Yugoslav era is reported at Rukavac bay.
- Blue Cave: the boat is the only part booked in advance. The fee, about €18 to €24, is paid in cash on Biševo. Swimming inside is not allowed, and the cave closes in swell. The best light is late morning to early afternoon, and the season runs from roughly early April to early November.
Pattern 3: a central Dalmatia loop
By road, a loop can link Trogir, Šibenik, Krka and Zadar. Šibenik’s St James cathedral is a UNESCO site. At Krka, no swimming is allowed at Skradinski Buk, and the park boat and shuttle run from 1 April to 31 October only. Adult tickets cost €40 from June to September, €20 in April, May and October, and €7 from November to March. Journey times between the towns are approximate, so confirm them before booking.
Planning notes
- Book the bed before the boat, then build the timing around it.
- Keep cash for the Blue Cave fee.
- Check the forecast for wind the evening before any sailing.
