Krabi Day Trips by Weather and Time Available
Most Krabi day-trip advice ranks places by beauty. A better filter is sea state and time, because those decide whether the boat sails at all and how much of your day it consumes. Here is how the options sort.
Half a day, calm sea: Four Islands
The Four Islands trip is the short option. A longtail visits Koh Poda, Chicken Island, Koh Tub and Phra Nang Cave Beach, with a snorkel stop and a lunch box included on typical listings. Operators sell it from about ฿800 to ฿1,200 per person, plus the national park fee. At low tide a sandbar links Chicken, Tub and Mor islands, so ask which tide your departure catches.
A full day, calm sea: Hong Islands
Hong is the scenic full day, run by speedboat to Than Bok Khorani National Park. The set pieces are the enclosed lagoon on Koh Hong, swimming in shallow water and a viewpoint stairway of roughly 400 steps. A national park fee is payable on the day, and tours are listed from about ฿1,400 to ฿2,000 per person. You can compare full-day Hong Islands tours on Viator before choosing a departure.
The longest day: Phi Phi
Phi Phi is a long speedboat day with stops at Pileh Lagoon, Monkey Beach and Viking Cave. Maya Bay itself is closed to landings from 1 August to 30 September, and it opens again on 1 October. When it is open, visits are timed, boats use a pontoon on the far side and visitors cross on a boardwalk. Swimming is banned in the bay. During the closure the tours still run, but they view the bay from the water instead. A national park fee is payable on the day, and it varies by source, so ask the operator for the current figure. The national park page for Phi Phi gives the official rules.
When the sea is rough
From May to October the swells can cancel any of the three trips. Go inland instead: Khlong Thom has the Hot Springs Waterfall, Emerald Pool and a visit to the Blue Pool, with cash fees at each gate. Khao Phanom Bencha National Park, with its waterfall walk, charges ฿100 for adults and ฿50 for children.
Neighbouring Phang Nga
Phang Nga Bay and James Bond Island sit in the next province. They work as a long excursion with a road transfer, so ask the operator for the pickup time and the total length of the day.
Safety
Life jackets should be worn on every boat. Overloaded boats and rough seas lie behind most accidents, so avoid any boat that looks crowded. Never plan a morning boat on the day you fly out.
The six-day Krabi itinerary shows how to place these trips across a longer stay, and the attraction tours page covers the land options.
Tip: book the Four Islands for your first day, so a cancelled boat leaves you spare days to try Hong or Phi Phi.
