Malang Day Trips: Bromo, Tumpak Sewu, Batu
Advisory, October 2026: Plan Bromo with extra care. Wildfires shut the national park from 8 to 20 August and again from 10 to 19 September, and four firefighters and volunteers died on 15 October at Bukit Kembang, Sukapura. Penanjakan, on the Pasuruan side, reopened on 23 October with a cap of 2,752 visitors a day. The Jemplang gate on the Malang side may close with little warning. Bromo is on volcano alert Level II, with a 1 km no-entry zone around the crater, and Semeru is on Level III with its hiking route closed and a 13 km exclusion zone to the south-east. Read the park’s notices at bromotenggersemeru.id , check the PVMBG alert and follow GOV.UK’s Indonesia travel advice .

Bromo
Reach the caldera from Malang by way of Tumpang, Gubugklakah and Ngadas to the Jemplang entrance, about 50 km. Jeep cooperatives work from Tumpang, Gubugklakah and Jemplang on the Malang side, and from Wonokitri, Cemoro Lawang and other villages on the other sides. Typical sunrise trips take in the Penanjakan viewpoint, the Sea of Sand, the 250 steps up to the crater rim, Pura Luhur Poten, Pasir Berbisik and the Savana. Walk across the sand if you can, and think twice before riding a horse, since welfare advocates have criticised the horse rides.
Tickets are online-only through bromotenggersemeru.id . The foreign rate is about Rp 255,000 a day, while the domestic rate is about Rp 54,000 on weekdays and Rp 79,000 on weekends and holidays, insurance included. Motorbikes pay Rp 5,000 and cars Rp 10,000. Entering without a ticket brings a fine of five times the price. Jeeps cost roughly Rp 575,000 to 1,250,000, depending on route and operator. Use an established operator, because police found jeeps without roadworthiness checks in March 2026. Temperatures at the viewpoints fall to 3 to 8 degrees C before sunrise.
Tumpak Sewu and Goa Tetes
The waterfall is in Lumajang Regency. Drive through Bululawang, Dampit and Ampelgading, about two hours. A ticket costs about Rp 20,000 and covers both the top viewpoint and the base. Parking is Rp 5,000 for a motorbike and Rp 10,000 for a car. Reaching the base means steep bamboo and iron steps, so boots are worth renting nearby for about Rp 10,000 to 20,000. Do not go down in rain, and plan to be on the trail well before the 15:00 close.
Batu
Selecta, a garden resort dating from 1928, charges about Rp 50,000. Batu’s orchards offer apple picking at prices you ask on arrival. The Jatim Park group, Museum Angkut and Batu Night Spectacular are described under attraction tours .
The South Coast
South of Malang, the road runs 65 to 70 km through Kepanjen to the Indian Ocean. At Pantai Balekambang, a footbridge crosses to Pulau Ismoyo, which has a Hindu temple, Pura Luhur Amertha Jati. Pantai Teluk Asmoro and Pantai Goa Cina are coves dotted with karst islets. The water is rough and the rip currents are lethal, so keep out of the sea. Visitors may not go to Pulau Sempu near Sendang Biru, a strict nature reserve where tourism is illegal and enforced.
