The centre is mostly flat, but the kampung route has stairs. Go before late morning, carry small rupiah notes for gates and stalls, and wear shoes with grip.
Route 1: Kayutangan and the Civic Core
Start at Alun-Alun Tugu, where the lotus pond and 1927 City Hall face each other. Head west on Jl. Majapahit across the Brantas River, then turn south onto Jl. Jenderal Basuki Rahmat. This is the Kayutangan Heritage street, with restored Dutch shophouses and old signboards. Toko Oen at No. 5 makes a good ice-cream break (tokooenmalang.com ). Next, duck into the lanes of Kampung Kayutangan to see Dutch houses from 1870 to 1920 with gables and old floor tiles. The walk ends at Alun-Alun Merdeka, where you can see the 1890 Masjid Jami’ and the 1905 Church of the Sacred Heart. Lunch options nearby are snacks in Pasar Besar and Rawon Nguling on Jl. Zainul Arifin.
Route 2: Jalan Ijen
Start at the Taman Balapan roundabout and head south under the royal palms. Karsten’s 1930s Art Deco villas line both sides. Katedral Ijen at No. 2 is worth a look inside for its brickwork and coloured glass. At No. 25A is Museum Brawijaya, where an artillery park and the Gerbong Maut, a 1947 prisoner wagon, stand outdoors. Remember that the wagon is a reminder of suffering. Entry is roughly Rp 10,000 to 25,000.
On Sunday from 05:30 to 09:00 the whole boulevard becomes a pedestrian street for Car Free Day, which fills with exercise groups, street performers and breakfast stalls. It is the liveliest time to walk it.
Route 3: Jodipan and Tridi
Begin on the south side of Jembatan Buk Gluduk, the Gatot Subroto bridge. Stand on its walkway for the view of bright rooftops under the railway viaduct. Steps lead down into Kampung Warna-Warni Jodipan, which costs about Rp 5,000 and is open from 07:00 to 17:00. Cross the yellow glass-bottomed Jembatan Kaca Ngalam Indonesia over the river to Kampung Tridi, whose walls carry 3D murals and which charges its own fee. Kampung Biru Arema, painted blue, is in Kiduldalem about 500 m from the station. It needs a short ride or walk instead of a lane link, and entry is free or about Rp 2,500.
Residents live in these alleys, so keep photographs away from open doors.
Weather and Getting Around
Days range from about 24 to 29 degrees C and evenings fall to 18 to 21. Heavy rain falls most afternoons from November to April, so walk in the morning. Blue angkot minibuses cost about Rp 5,000 a ride, and Grab and Gojek bikes and cars are easy to find.
